Love, Death & Robots is an anthology series with 45 short episodes exploring themes of love, death, and robots – often all at once. Here are 20 of the best. It remains one of the best anthology shows of the 21st century, offering a visually striking, action-packed, and entertaining experience.
Over the years, Love, Death & Robots has had its ups and downs, meaning everyone’s favorite episode is likely different. Because each episode has a unique director, art style, and theme, they all feel quite distinct—and what makes a great episode is really a matter of personal preference.
20. Night Of The Mini Dead
Season 3, Episode 4
Of the two episodes in Love, Death & Robots that use the tilt-shift style, “Night of the Mini Dead” is the stronger one. It shows a zombie apocalypse from above, making the zombies look like tiny toys and the blood like colorful paint. While it’s not meant to be realistic, the high-pitched screams are amusing, and the fast-moving action keeps you engaged.
19. Beyond The Aquila Rift
Season 1, Episode 7
“Beyond the Aquila Rift” is widely considered one of the most disturbing episodes of Love, Death & Robots. The shocking reveal later in the episode is truly unsettling. While the episode’s incredibly realistic visuals aren’t always perfectly believable, this actually adds to the impact of one especially frightening scene.
18. The Drowned Giant
Season 2, Episode 8
I just finished watching “The Drowned Giant,” and it really drove home why Love, Death & Robots is so important. It’s a story that likely wouldn’t get told anywhere else. The premise – a giant washes ashore, and the villagers go from curious to completely bored – is surprisingly poignant. It’s a really clever commentary on how quickly we lose interest in even the most extraordinary things. It’s a short, but impactful piece, and a perfect example of the show’s willingness to take risks on unique ideas.
17. Ice
Season 2, Episode 2
The unique visual style of “Ice” is featured in several episodes of Love, Death & Robots, and it consistently stands out. This particular episode takes place on a distant Earth colony, where young men prove their courage by racing across frozen landscapes, carefully dodging massive ice whales. It’s a visually charming and beautiful story that quickly develops memorable characters.
16. Mason’s Rats
Season 3, Episode 7
“Mason’s Rats” tells the story of Mason, a Scottish farmer constantly battling intelligent rats who are stealing his crops. The conflict escalates when he buys a dangerous machine to eliminate the pests. However, the film takes an uplifting turn as Mason realizes he’d prefer a challenging opponent to a win achieved through such violence.
15. The Secret War
Season 1, Episode 18
“The Secret War” is one of those Love, Death & Robots episodes where the action takes center stage. It doesn’t bother with a lot of backstory, instead throwing you right into a thrilling fight between soldiers and wolf-like creatures. You won’t know why they’re battling, but you’ll quickly find yourself rooting for the soldiers anyway.
14. 400 Boys
Season 4, Episode 4
At first, “400 Boys” feels like a silly and over-the-top mix of dystopian action and the movie Warriors. But it quickly becomes enjoyable thanks to its dedication to its unusual premise and strong voice acting. The story takes place in a bizarre future where street gangs battle for control of a warped version of Earth. Things get even stranger when a gang of enormous babies arrives, and everyone has to band together – complete with cockney accents – to defend themselves.
13. When The Yogurt Took Over
Season 1, Episode 6
“When the Yogurt Took Over” is perfectly suited for an anthology series like Love, Death & Robots. The story centers around scientists accidentally creating a bowl of yogurt that becomes conscious, kind, and incredibly intelligent. This yogurt swiftly solves all of Earth’s problems before mysteriously disappearing.
12. The Tall Grass
Season 2, Episode 5
“The Tall Grass” is a creepy and well-crafted horror story about a man named Laird. While traveling by train one night, his train gets stuck in a cornfield. Despite a warning from the conductor, Laird goes to investigate a strange noise coming from the tall grass, a decision that puts his journey – and perhaps his life – in danger.
11. Kill Team Kill
Season 3, Episode 5
“Kill Team Kill” is a fast-paced, action-packed episode that doesn’t bother with a lot of plot – it’s just pure fun. An experienced military team encounters a cyborg bear, and things quickly go wrong. The bear eliminates almost the entire team with surprisingly gruesome and creative methods, reminiscent of the cartoon Happy Tree Friends.
