When Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings first came out a few years ago, Shang-Chi appeared poised to become a major new hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie was well-received by critics and did well at the box office, earning $432.2 million globally even as theaters were recovering from the pandemic, quickly making Shang-Chi a popular character with fans. Despite this success, a sequel hasn’t happened yet. However, Shang-Chi will be back in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s been a while since actor Simu Liu last appeared in a Marvel film, so Shang-Chi has likely changed a lot since we last saw him.
While promoting his new show, The Copenhagen Test, Liu discussed how his portrayal of Shang-Chi has evolved since Doomsday. He explained that both the character and he himself have matured, allowing him to bring a greater sense of confidence to the role. Shang-Chi has also had time to adjust and become more comfortable with his identity and duties, so audiences will meet a more settled and self-assured version of the hero.
Liu explained his reluctance to discuss specifics about the film, mentioning a past experience where a simple comment was taken out of context. He recalled being interviewed while cold on a rooftop and a casual remark about his costume spiraled into misconstrued headlines. Because of this, he’s now very careful about what he shares regarding the project.
Avengers: Doomsday Was a Very Different Experience for Simu Liu

Simu Liu described working on Doomsday as a welcome change of pace from his role in The Copenhagen Test. While he was heavily involved in all aspects of filmmaking as an executive producer on The Copenhagen Test, he appreciated being able to simply focus on acting in Doomsday. He enjoyed the feeling of contributing to a large-scale Marvel project without the added responsibility of behind-the-scenes leadership. He valued his more active role on The Copenhagen Test, but felt it was refreshing to take a break from that level of involvement and just be a part of something bigger.
While Doomsday has many elements to juggle, Shang-Chi’s return is particularly anticipated. Fans are eager to see how the character has developed since his last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His previous film focused on his origins and showed him finding his identity and place in the world. Now that he’s come into his own, Shang-Chi is expected to be a more assured and formidable hero in Doomsday.
Following the events of his own movie, Shang-Chi has seemingly crossed paths with other major heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While his specific part in the upcoming Doomsday film is still a secret, a recent Disney presentation suggested he’s now part of the new Avengers team led by Sam Wilson (Captain America). After deciding to rebuild the Avengers at the end of Captain America: Brave New World, Sam needs more allies, and Shang-Chi – now more powerful with the Ten Rings – would be a strong asset. It makes sense that Captain America would have sought him out.
It’s frustrating that we haven’t seen a sequel to Shang-Chi yet, as another film would be a great way to develop his character further. With such a large cast in the upcoming Doomsday film, there’s concern that some actors might not get enough screen time, but hopefully Simu Liu will be able to make a strong impression as Shang-Chi. He seems poised to have a significant role, especially since he previously spoke highly of working with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, suggesting Shang-Chi will interact with the X-Men. Despite the massive scale of Doomsday, it’s clear why Liu enjoyed filming his scenes.
