While Xbox is releasing fewer games only for its consoles, PlayStation continues to focus on exclusive titles for the PS5. A new PS5 exclusive game, Code Violet, just launched – only ten days into the new year – but it’s not getting great reviews. Though there aren’t many reviews yet, critics generally aren’t impressed, which is disappointing for both fans and Sony.
Team Kill Media’s new horror game, Code Violet, launched on PlayStation 5 on January 10th, and reviews are now in. Unfortunately, the game has received a low score of 40/100 on Metacritic. Many players were hoping Code Violet would be similar to the Dino Crisis series, combining action, horror, and sci-fi, but it appears this early 2026 PS5 exclusive isn’t living up to expectations.
Code Violet Releases on PS5 to Poor Critic Reviews
Early reviews for the game are almost entirely negative. The highest score comes from 4News.It, which gave it a 4.9/10, but even they pointed out that the game doesn’t quite live up to its potential. Reviewers commonly criticize the combat and exploration as feeling clunky and repetitive, and the game also appears to have a lot of technical problems.
The game is fairly short, around 6 hours, so early reports of it feeling repetitive are concerning. It’s worth remembering that what critics think isn’t always what players think, though. Since Code Violet just came out, there aren’t many player reviews yet. However, issues like flawed gameplay and bugs are hard to ignore, and could really hurt the game if they aren’t fixed before the official launch.
Currently, players have given the game Code Violet an average rating of around 2.9 out of 5 stars on the PlayStation Store. While about 34% of reviewers gave it a perfect 5-star rating, a larger 37% rated it just one star. We’ll have a clearer picture of how fans feel once review sites like Metacritic allow player feedback, but early signs suggest the player reception won’t be drastically different from what critics have said.

While Code Violet, the first PlayStation 5 exclusive game of 2026, didn’t make a strong impression, PS5 owners still have a lot to be excited about this year. Several highly anticipated exclusives are on the way, including Marvel’s Wolverine this fall and Nioh 3 next month. Plus, former Xbox exclusives like Avowed (coming in February) and a Halo remaster are also scheduled to release on PS5 this year.
Code Violet is available now on PS5 for $49.99. It will not be released on PC or other consoles.
