Anyone who follows video games knows that developing them can take years. Last year, fans finally got some highly anticipated sequels, which helped ease the wait for games like Silksong. However, many other exciting games are still in development, and some have been announced over ten years ago! While Bethesda has confirmed Elder Scrolls 6 is still happening, not all eagerly awaited games receive regular updates, and some are starting to feel like distant dreams.
It’s unfortunately common for announced video games to get canceled. When we don’t hear about a promising project for a long time, fans often worry it’s been abandoned. Sometimes, these games surprise us and reappear, showing that developers have been quietly working on them – we saw that happen with Witchbrook recently. However, not all long-delayed games are so fortunate. I’m starting to believe these four highly anticipated games might never actually come out.
4) Hogwarts Legacy 2

My worry isn’t how long it will take to develop a sequel, but rather the current situation at Warner Bros. Hogwarts Legacy was very successful, blending the well-loved Harry Potter brand with a fun, open-world role-playing game. While Warner Bros. Games says a second Hogwarts Legacy game is a key focus, the company hasn’t consistently released successful games recently.
WB Games has faced a lot of challenges recently, including layoffs and the closing of studios, even canceling promising games like the one based on Wonder Woman. The entire Monolith Productions team was affected last year. With rumors that Netflix might buy Warner Bros, the future of WB Games looks even more unstable. If they release another major title, Hogwarts Legacy 2 seems like the most likely candidate, but there’s already debate about what that sequel should be, making its development uncertain.
3) Haunted Chocolatier

A coworker recently suggested that Haunted Chocolatier might never be released, and I secretly agree. The game, from the creator of Stardew Valley (Eric Barone), was announced in 2021, but Barone keeps focusing on adding new content to Stardew Valley instead. While Stardew fans are happy about that, it doesn’t look good for the chances of Haunted Chocolatier ever coming out.
When the update for Stardew Valley (version 1.7) was announced last year, I immediately worried that Haunted Chocolatier might never be finished. I don’t know what Eric Barone (Concerned Ape) is thinking, but it seems like he might go back to working on Stardew Valley whenever he hits a roadblock with the new game. He’s stated that Haunted Chocolatier is still years away, and honestly, I’m starting to doubt it will ever be released, even though I’d be first in line to play it if it ever does.
2) Beyond Good & Evil 2

The follow-up to the game Beyond Good & Evil was originally announced in 2008, but then went silent for almost ten years. While there have been a few updates since then, details about the game remain limited. Ubisoft has suggested it’s still being made, especially with the release of the Beyond Good & Evil 20th anniversary edition in 2024. However, a development process that’s taken this long is often a cause for concern.
The last substantial update on Beyond Good & Evil 2 came from a trusted source who said it was still in the very early stages of development, back in 2024. Since then, there’s been little news except speculation that the game is still a long way from release. Considering how long Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been in development, it’s becoming increasingly clear the project is facing difficulties, and I’m starting to lose hope that it will ever come out.
1) The Wolf Among Us 2

While The Wolf Among Us 2 hasn’t been in the works as long as Beyond Good & Evil 2, its development issues have been more widely known. Shortly after the sequel was announced, Telltale Games had to lay off many employees, which cast doubt on the future of the game. Although development stalled for years, it hasn’t been officially canceled.
The game has been talked about on and off for years, and recently there was a rumor in mid-2025 that a release date would be revealed soon. However, no announcement came, and we haven’t heard anything new about the sequel. At this point, it seems unlikely that The Wolf Among Us 2 will ever be released.
