Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce on Todd as murderer: “Maybe Theo really did push him that far”

Coronation Street revealed a long-awaited mystery last night: Theo (James Cartwright) is the character who was murdered. Viewers had been anticipating the reveal for months.

Most viewers likely weren’t shocked, as this character has been mistreating Todd (Gareth Pierce) for quite a while on the show. Many of Todd’s friends have been wanting to retaliate for the emotional and psychological harm he’s inflicted.

Although it’s still unclear who ultimately killed Theo, Pierce has been discussing the plot with the media, including TopMob, and suggesting that Todd will likely be a suspect.

He believes the audience will likely suspect Todd, and he points out that Todd has strong motives – some might even feel he was justified in his actions, considering how much he was provoked.

It really makes you wonder if anyone is capable of murder when pushed to the absolute limit, doesn’t it? I think we all want to believe things are simple – that there’s a clear line between right and wrong – but honestly, I suspect real life is a lot messier. Watching our show, I genuinely started to feel like maybe, just maybe, Theo was truly backed into a corner and didn’t have any other choice.

However, Theo wasn’t the only one upset, and several other people – including Summer, George, and Gary – were also angry with his actions, so it could have been anyone.

Pierce explained that while the audience will understand Todd had reasons to act as he did, they’ll also realize others did too. This is largely because Theo has been deliberately separating Todd from the people he’s closest to. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen those friends and family members begin to figure things out, reconnect with Todd, and try to help him leave the relationship.

As a movie fan, I think the audience will really root for characters like George, Summer, Christina, and Glenda. They’re the ones we’ll be hoping will step up and help Todd. But it’s more than just rescuing him, isn’t it? I think we’ll be wondering if they’ll go too far, maybe even decide to take matters into their own hands. It’s great that characters like George and Summer already knew Theo’s true colors, and how fiercely protective they’ve become of Todd – that really draws you in.

As a film fan, I’m really intrigued by all the developing conflicts. It looks like Carl is becoming a major rival to Theo and isn’t doing so well, which is setting up a great dynamic. And then there’s Gary – he and Theo used to be really close, both as friends and colleagues. But now Gary feels betrayed and used, and knowing how much he hates bullies, I expect he’ll be a key player in what happens next. So, there are quite a few characters with strong motivations and potential for conflict, which is really exciting!

Who will be revealed as the killer? Keep watching Coronation Street as the clues start to emerge…
