5 Most Ridiculous Anime Villain Plans That Somehow Worked Anyway

Anime villains are known for plans that are both incredibly clever and completely over-the-top, and that’s what makes them so fun to watch. Their schemes usually rely on complicated thinking, big guesses, and risky moves that wouldn’t make sense in real life. But within the anime world, these plans somehow succeed, leaving audiences amazed and confused at the same time.

Villainous schemes in anime, whether meticulously planned with incredible foresight or based on complete chaos, often seem unbelievable. However, it’s this very outlandishness that makes them so memorable. Anime loves grand, over-the-top storytelling, and these ridiculous plans are a perfect example of that creative freedom.

5. Light Yagami’s Notebook of Death — Death Note

Light Yagami’s idea to eliminate criminals and build a perfect world seems immature, overconfident, and destined to fail. Surprisingly, though, it works really well for most of the series. He successfully targets international criminals, controls world governments, and even outsmarts a brilliant detective—all while maintaining perfect grades. Ignoring the questionable logic and moral issues, Light’s plan relied heavily on his massive ego, a lot of energy, and convenient storytelling. A normal person would have made a mistake quickly, but within the world of Death Note, Light’s inflated sense of self was unsettlingly effective… until it finally failed.

4. Aizen’s ‘I Planned Everything’ Meme — Bleach

Aizen’s scheme was essentially this: he’d planned everything that had ever happened, even the seemingly random or illogical events. He masterfully controlled Soul Society’s history over centuries, engineered conflicts across different dimensions, and even pretended to die just for the sake of it. Despite his plans often relying on unbelievable twists, everything went his way until Ichigo ultimately defeated him.

What’s most striking about Aizen isn’t his power, but how unbelievably he pulled everything off. For years, he hypnotized the leaders of Soul Society, built an incredibly powerful army, and defied the fundamental rules of the afterlife – all while maintaining a calm demeanor and a confident smirk. His true strength wasn’t his sword; it was his ability to control the story itself.

3. Lelouch vi Britannia’s Worldwide 4D Morality Play — Code Geass

Lelouch’s incredibly bold plan – to become the world’s most despised ruler so he could be executed and finally bring about peace – is truly unforgettable. The anime’s finale sees him uniting the world through his own sacrifice, becoming the villain everyone loves to hate in order to achieve lasting peace. It’s a wild concept, but also surprisingly beautiful and moving.

What really gets me about this plan is how brilliantly it plays on feelings. It’s this incredibly dark idea: if you can’t defeat evil, you become evil yourself, and then destroy everything – including yourself. It’s so manipulative and heartbreaking, but in a way that’s almost beautifully over-the-top. Honestly, I think only anime could handle a concept like this without it feeling cheesy or self-aware. It’s just…perfectly dramatic!

2. Madara Uchiha’s Infinite Nap Plan — Naruto Shippuden

Madara’s ultimate plan was surprisingly simple: put the entire world into a never-ending sleep using a powerful illusion. And he nearly succeeded! Despite battling armies, powerful individuals, and even reincarnated gods, Madara almost managed to take over the world, showing that a massive ego and impressive physique can get you surprisingly far.

It’s really striking how ridiculous Madara’s plan seemed even to the characters within the story, but nobody could stop him until Kaguya and Black Zetsu showed up. His idea of achieving “peace through illusion” was completely warped philosophically, but brilliantly calculated from a strategic point of view. He wasn’t wrong about humanity’s tendency to destroy itself – he just chose the most extreme and unsettling method to try and prevent it.

1. Joseph Joestar Outsmarts Kars – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Joseph Joestar’s win against Kars, the most powerful being in the series, is considered a hilariously clever highlight in anime. Once Kars reaches his final form, he’s nearly invincible – immune to the sun, able to heal from any wound, and capable of transforming his body into anything he needs. Joseph, completely outmatched, has to depend on his fast wits, incredible luck, and ability to think on his feet.

Joseph’s strategy to defeat Kars is surprisingly simple – and relies heavily on luck. He doesn’t have a detailed plan, but instead reacts quickly to changing circumstances, hoping to trick Kars into being blasted into space by a volcanic eruption. While the whole thing – the eruption happening at just the right moment, a rock fragment acting like a rocket, and Kars being unable to return – is incredibly far-fetched, it works because Joseph is clever and can take advantage of even the most ridiculous situations to win.
