The Good Doctor Is A Global Netflix Hit

After being cancelled two years ago, the medical drama The Good Doctor is now back on Netflix. The show, which originally ran for seven seasons and 126 episodes, is a remake of a popular South Korean series. It centers around Shaun Murphy, a young doctor with autism, and explores the difficulties he encounters in his profession.

Liz Feldman and David Shore, the creators of the hit show House M.D., oversaw the adaptation. Despite being the most-watched show in its time slot and generally performing well, The Good Doctor concluded after seven seasons. Reports suggest the cancellation was partly due to networks cutting costs by ending long-running, higher-budget shows.

I’m so thrilled to see The Good Doctor really taking off on Netflix! Even though you can watch it on Hulu here in the US, it’s available on Netflix everywhere else, and it’s become a huge hit all over the world. I’ve been checking FlixPatrol, and it’s currently in the Top 10 in over 70 countries – it’s amazing to see it doing so well in places like Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, and even the UK!

Freddie Highmore, known for his role in Bates Motel, starred as Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor. He and Richard Schiff are the only two actors who appeared in every season of the show. Despite a changing cast of characters who would often leave and then return briefly, The Good Doctor developed a loyal following, proving the appeal of a long-running television drama.

Look, I’m a big fan of The Good Doctor, but even I have to admit there’s been some debate about how it portrays autism. Leading up to the final season, people were really divided – some thought the show did a great job being sensitive and realistic, while others felt certain storylines crossed the line just to create drama. And honestly, some scenes with Shaun really bothered people, making him come across as prejudiced, which was tough to watch.

The Good Doctor is just one of many established TV shows finding new popularity on streaming services. Platforms like Netflix are actively seeking out medical dramas to create their own episodic series, but success has been uneven. While shows like The Pitt have done well for HBO Max, there’s still a strong demand for long-running dramas with plenty of episodes that viewers can always turn to.
