Elijah Wood responded to comments made by Ian McKellen regarding a possible reunion between Frodo and Gandalf in a new The Lord of the Rings project, tentatively titled The Hunt for Gollum. McKellen, who will reprise his role as Gandalf, playfully hinted at a fan event that the movie features characters named Frodo and Gandalf, but didn’t reveal any further details.
At FAN EXPO New Orleans, actor Elijah Wood discussed a potential role in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum during a panel led by Liam Crowley from ScreenRant. While Wood didn’t confirm or deny his involvement, he playfully hinted at it, saying “a wizard is to be trusted,” and shared his enthusiasm for the project. You can find his full response below.
I can’t say anything for sure, but trust me, a good storyteller knows what they’re doing. Officially, I’m not permitted to confirm any details. However, I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the new film. It feels like the original creative team is reuniting, which is fantastic. Philippa Boyens is co-writing and producing, and it’s that same core group working together again to tell a story that will be a really enjoyable look into a beloved character. I’m just really excited to see how it all comes together.
I’m really happy Andy is directing the movie. It just feels perfect, considering how much he’s embodied the character. I’m genuinely thrilled about it, and I think it’s going to be fantastic. Plus, I’m excited to hear they’re planning more films set in this world – it’ll be interesting to see where they take it, and it’s all very promising.
I’m really hoping Elijah Wood will be joining Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis for The Hunt for Gollum! He’s being typically tight-lipped, saying he trusts a wizard but can’t confirm anything, which honestly feels like a very good sign. Considering McKellen’s reprising his role as Gandalf and Serkis is back as Gollum, it would be a huge shock if they recast Frodo, wouldn’t it? I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Ian McKellen announced that Frodo and Gandalf will appear together again, and filming is set to start in May. Details about the casting of Elijah Wood and other returning actors are likely to be kept secret until production begins. The movie is currently planned for release in theaters on December 17, 2027.
As Wood points out, Andy Serkis is both starring as Gollum and directing the film. The project also reunites many of the creative team from Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings films, such as writer and producer Philippa Boyens.
Andy Serkis has hinted at the possibility of expanding the film series beyond The Hunt for Gollum, which could mean he might reprise his role in future Lord of the Rings projects, depending on their place in the overall timeline. However, whether those additional films get made will probably depend on how well his current movie performs.
Wood last played Frodo in a short cameo at the start of the 2012 film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The new film, The Hunt for Gollum, will be set after Bilbo Baggins’ (Ian Holm) 111th birthday party, but before Frodo leaves the Shire.
Because the new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will mainly focus on Gandalf’s search for Gollum, Frodo probably won’t be a major part of the story. Still, it would be great to see actors Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Elijah Wood (Frodo) share a scene together, even if it’s a short one.
