Godzilla, King Kong, Mothra, and other classic monsters from the Japanese company Toho – known as kaiju – now all share the same cinematic universe, often called the Monsterverse. While some details of their backstories have been adjusted for American audiences, the films have largely captured the essence of these iconic creatures. This is especially impressive considering how passionate fans are about preserving the spirit of these monsters, particularly after the 1998 Godzilla film. Rumors suggest SpaceGodzilla will be the next classic kaiju to join the Monsterverse in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. If they succeed in bringing him to life accurately, we have a few ideas about which monsters should be adapted next.
Ebirah, Kamacuras, and Kumonga aren’t the most exciting monsters, so they aren’t essential for a Monsterverse film. Megalon and Titanosaurus are also better remembered as classics from their original eras. However, the next three monsters we’ll discuss would be fantastic additions to the Monsterverse.
3) Gigan

Now that the Monsterverse has shown it can handle cosmic-level threats like SpaceGodzilla, it could easily introduce other monsters from that scale. Gigan would actually be an even more fitting pick.
The Monsterverse already pitted Godzilla against a mechanical version of himself in Godzilla vs. Kong, so the upcoming Supernova film will likely follow a similar pattern. However, Gigan is a truly original villain – his menacing design, whether from the classic Showa era or Godzilla: Final Wars, makes him a unique threat. He’s exactly the kind of monster that would force Godzilla and Kong to team up to defeat him.
2) Battra

I’m really glad to see Mothra becoming a consistent player in Legendary’s Monsterverse. Honestly, it’s one of the things they’ve nailed in adapting these classic Toho properties. Looking back at the original Japanese films, Mothra was everywhere – she battled Godzilla, teamed up against Ghidorah, faced off with Ebirah, and even appeared in the massive Destroy All Monsters! And it’s great to see that continue here. She had a solid role in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and even though her appearance in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was short, it felt important – a lot like her part in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. It’s clear the filmmakers understand what makes this character special.
Beyond Mothra vs. Godzilla and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Mothra truly shined in Godzilla vs. Mothra from the Heisei era. This was largely because the film introduced Battra, a rare monster with a fully developed character. Bringing Battra into the Monsterverse would be a great addition. If Mothra remains a part of this franchise – and she should – it would be best to also include Battra, who acts as a compelling counterpart to her, even if he initially appears as a villain.
1) Destoroyah

Throughout the seven Godzilla films of the Heisei era, each new monster seemed more challenging than the last. He battled the military in the first film, then faced Biollante, who wasn’t much of a threat. After that came Ghidorah – who even lost a head in their initial battle – followed by Mothra and Battra, and finally, Mechagodzilla II. Each movie gradually increased the power of Godzilla’s opponents.
The movie Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla represents a significant escalation in the series, and if Supernova introduces SpaceGodzilla, the stakes need to be raised to match the intensity of the earlier films. The best way to do that would be to bring in Destoroyah – Godzilla’s most dangerous and ruthless enemy. Godzilla barely defeated Destoroyah, only winning due to an unexpected surge of power from his own radiation. Without that boost, Destoroyah would have won. This kind of high-stakes battle would be a fitting climax to Godzilla’s run in the Monsterverse, especially if the creators are considering killing him off and introducing a new Godzilla.
