Golden Globes 2026: One Battle After Another Wins Best Picture Battle

It was one battle after another for Best Picture this year.

At the 2026 Golden Globes, held January 11th at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and hosted by Nikki Glaser, One Battle After Another won the award for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. You can find a complete list of winners here.

The comedy won over nominees including Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, and Nouvelle Vague. Presenter Julia Roberts even remarked that it was a very competitive category, saying, “Jee whiz, that is a tough category.”

The film received a total of four awards throughout the ceremony, more than any other movie that night. It had already won prizes for Best Supporting Actress, a special award recognizing Teyana Taylor, and Best Director and Best Screenplay, both awarded to Paul Thomas Anderson.

During her acceptance speech for Best Picture, producer Sara Murphy expressed gratitude towards the film’s director and cast – Teyana, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall – describing their collective success as “an embarrassment of riches.”

She also gave a touching tribute to Adam Somner, the film’s assistant director, who sadly passed away from thyroid cancer on November 27, 2024, at the age of 57.

She said she completely agreed with Paul that working on this film was an extraordinary experience. She described it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially because of Adam Somner, who sadly passed away and is deeply missed by everyone involved.

During his acceptance speech for Best Director, Paul praised Adam, calling him an exceptional assistant director.

Paul explained that the contributions of a particular person were incredibly valuable, not just to him and the team, but to the film itself. He credited this person with giving him the opportunity to be where he was and with making the entire filmmaking process enjoyable, which he believes translated to the audience’s positive reaction.

Many viewers were surprised that Wicked: For Good wasn’t nominated for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) at the ceremony, despite receiving five nominations overall. These included nominations for its stars, Cynthia Erivo for Best Actress and Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress.

The film One Battle After Another led the nominations at the awards show, also receiving recognition for its music, and performances by Leonardo and Chase, who were both nominated for leading actor and actress.

This film was the first collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson. DiCaprio said he signed on because he was a big fan of Anderson’s work.

Leonardo DiCaprio explained that his main reason for taking on the movie was his long-held desire to collaborate with director Paul Thomas Anderson. He told Esquire magazine in August that he’d admired Anderson for around twenty years and was particularly drawn to the story of a former revolutionary attempting to leave his past behind and build a quiet life with his daughter.
