Jessie Buckley Clarifies Being Able to Drink Paul Mescal “Like Water”

Jessie Buckley didn’t compare Paul Mescal to a summer’s day.

During her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards, she jokingly said she could ‘drink him like water.’ She later clarified this comment after Hamnet won two Golden Globes on January 11th. (You can find a full list of winners from the Golden Globes 2026 ceremony here.)

She explained to reporters that he’s crucial to her work and has helped her realize her full potential as an actor. She said he helps you connect with your deepest emotions, and once you understand those core feelings, they become natural and effortless.

As for Paul, the 29-year-old is equally effusive in his praise of his costar.

Paul believes that Jessie Buckley’s performance in Hamnet will be studied by acting students for years to come. He told reporters it was a truly remarkable performance, one that people will be discussing and admiring for a long time, and rightly so – he considers it among the best performances audiences will see in years.

He explained that while they could enjoy the film’s success for the next few weeks – and hopefully celebrate the actress herself – the true impact of her work would be felt for decades to come. He felt lucky to have witnessed her talent up close.

Jessie recently received the Best Actress award from both the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards. Her film, Hamnet, also won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes.

Director Chloe Zhao, whom producer Steven Spielberg praised as the perfect storyteller for this project during her introduction, shared a memory of a conversation she had with Paul before the awards ceremony.

Working on Hamnet helped him understand that true artistry comes from being brave enough to show your authentic self, rather than trying to be someone you think you should be, and from fully embracing connection with the world, she explained.

Chloe, also nominated for directing and writing, explained that even our flaws and insecurities are relatable. She believes that by acknowledging these parts of ourselves, we allow others to see themselves and embrace who they truly are.
