The ending of the Netflix series sparked a lot of debate among viewers, and we might now understand why so many were unhappy. According to reports released on Monday, filming for the finale actually started before the script was finished.
In one scene from the documentary, Matt Duffer, a co-creator of Stranger Things, explains to his crew that they’ve known the ending all along and have it planned out. He admits the only challenge is finding the time to actually write it all down.
Some fans might be surprised to learn that the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, felt rushed while writing the final episodes. Considering the three-year gap between seasons 4 and 5, many expected a more relaxed production schedule.
Even as filming was underway, the script wasn’t finished. “We were shooting the eighth episode, and it wasn’t fully written yet – sorry for the spoiler!” explains Montana Maniscalco, a production assistant, in a documentary clip from the 117th day of filming. “We didn’t even know the full story ourselves.”
Matt Duffer admits he hadn’t fully read the script for the final episode, even while they were filming it. He says he’s never worked like this before and feels strange skipping ahead to episode eight. He wasn’t thrilled about having to do it.
The Stranger Things Finale Was Rushed Despite a Three-Year Wait
In a recent interview, the creators of Stranger Things discussed the challenges of finishing the show’s finale. They explained that they faced constant pressure from both the production team and Netflix regarding episode 8. They described it as the most difficult writing process they’d ever experienced, not just due to the need for a strong script, but also because of the overwhelming amount of feedback and interference they were receiving at the time.

In a recent interview, the actor discussed how the romantic relationship between his character, Jonathan Byers, and Nancy Wheeler (played by Natalie Dyer) ended. He felt the conclusion of their story was realistic and genuine.
After spending so much time with these characters, you naturally become invested in their journey and want them to find some resolution. However, the authenticity of the ending felt more crucial than simply seeing them together. It was a beautifully written and honest scene that really resonated with me.
