Two years after its release, director Nia DaCosta has shared her thoughts on how the movie The Marvels performed in theaters. The film, a sequel to Captain Marvel, didn’t do well financially, becoming Marvel’s biggest box office disappointment with a worldwide gross of $206 million, despite costing around $270 million to make.
In a recent interview with Deadline about her new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, director DaCosta reflected on her work with The Marvels. She shared that she’s thankful for the opportunity and cherishes the connections she made, even getting a chance to visit the set of Avengers: Doomsday. Here’s what DaCosta had to say:
Looking back at my experience with Marvel is interesting. There was a lot of talk surrounding the films, but ultimately, everyone involved genuinely tried their best to create something great. I really value the relationships I built with those people. I even visited the set of ‘Avengers’ last summer and it was great to reconnect with the producers, the Russo brothers, and some friends who were in the movie. Despite the box office results and reviews, it’s comforting to know that everyone had good intentions and gave it their all, and that’s all you can ask for.
Even though The Marvels didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office and received mixed reviews, director Nia DaCosta remains optimistic. She values the strong relationships she built during the film, especially with people who also worked on Avengers: Endgame with directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
DaCosta hinted that some familiar faces from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday might make an appearance. She mentioned having friends involved in the film, which could include Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), or Teyonnah Parris (Monica Rambeau) from The Marvels. However, as of now, none of these actresses have been officially confirmed to be in the movie.
Even though The Marvels’ box office performance wasn’t a major success, the film played an important role in setting up the next Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday. It reintroduced Beast (played by Kelsey Grammer) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a scene after the credits, showing him when Monica Rambeau unexpectedly travels to another universe. Grammer will definitely be back to play Beast in the upcoming Avengers film, which will heavily feature the multiverse.
Although Nia DaCosta recently spoke positively about making The Marvels, she’s been more open in the past about the difficulties she encountered. In an August 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained that a weak script was a major problem for both Candyman and The Marvels, causing issues throughout production. DaCosta actually helped write the script for The Marvels, working alongside Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.
Despite collaborating on the script, the director couldn’t fully realize her original vision for The Marvels. She previously told ComicBookMovie.com that things changed to the point where the final film wasn’t what she initially proposed or even what she first filmed.
Directing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple seemed to be a much easier experience for DaCosta than making The Marvels. However, she still considers The Marvels a worthwhile project. That film also significantly influenced the direction of the Multiverse Saga, which will finish with the sequel to Doomsday, titled Avengers: Secret Wars.
