Sony once planned a large-scale expansion of its Spider-Man universe. Following the success of the first Venom movie, they started developing films featuring characters like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven. A Black Cat spin-off was also in the works, but it went through several revisions and was eventually cancelled. Recently, a scene that appears to be from the cancelled Black Cat movie has been released, giving fans a glimpse of what the film could have been.
A user named @NerdTowerYT shared new information about the scrapped Black Cat movie that was being developed in 2021. They saw storyboards showing the origin of the Black Cat persona. The scene depicts the character attending a costume party dressed in goth attire, where she becomes upset and cries in the bathroom. She then intentionally smudges her makeup, creating the look that becomes the Black Cat’s signature ‘mask’ and marks her debut as the character.
Let me tell you a little something I heard. Back in 2021, they were working on a Black Cat movie, and I actually got a peek at some storyboards. There was this one scene that was…rough. Black Cat was at a costume party, dressed in full goth gear, and she was having a meltdown in the bathroom – mascara running, smudging everything, basically creating this whole ‘battle-ready’ look from tears. Honestly, it was a mess. It just didn’t feel right, you know?

On X (formerly Twitter), user @NerdTowerYT shared that a Black Cat movie was reportedly in development in 2021. They claimed to have seen storyboards showing a scene where Black Cat, dressed in goth attire at a costume party, breaks down in the bathroom, messes up her makeup, and then transforms into her crime-fighting persona. According to the user, the concept was poorly executed.
The Tale of Sony’s Black Cat Movie Is Wild (But The First Version Sounded Fun)

The making of the Black Cat movie has a surprisingly complex history. It originally began as a team-up film called Silver & Black, featuring both Silver Sable and Black Cat. The plan was for the two characters to start as enemies before joining forces to defeat Dr. Mendel Stromm. Black Cat gained powers from Stromm but managed to escape before he could fully control her. Silver Sable then pursued Black Cat, believing she held a connection to Stromm, who was responsible for her father’s death.
Gina Prince-Bythewood was originally slated to direct a Spider-Man film featuring villains like Tarantula, Chameleon, Scorpion, and Norman Osborn, with Tombstone making a brief appearance. While the planned story had potential for exciting action, the project was cancelled. Sony ultimately decided it would be better to give Sable and Black Cat their own individual movies instead.
Details about the planned Silver & Black movie came out in 2020, and storyboards from 2021 suggest these details were likely scrapped when Sony decided to make separate films for each character. One sequence might have shown us the very first appearance of Felicia Hardy as Black Cat in her own movie, but it’s difficult to say for certain. Now, Sony seems open to having its characters team up with those in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, which is great news. Black Cat might appear in Brand New Day, but even if she doesn’t, there’s still a possibility she could join the MCU in the future.
