As a longtime fan, I just finished watching “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5,” and it’s a fascinating look behind the scenes of the show’s final season. The documentary finally addresses a lot of questions fans have been asking, and I was particularly intrigued by the explanation of why Mike Wheeler, played by Finn Wolfhard, didn’t end up wielding a gun in the climactic battle. It turns out there was a deliberate creative decision behind it, and the documentary sheds light on the reasoning.
Stranger Things doc reveals why Finn Wolfhard didn’t get to use a gun in the finale
In a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Stranger Things 5, Matt Duffer shared that Finn Wolfhard and the other young actors requested their characters be involved in the final battle, and Duffer happily agreed. Wolfhard specifically asked Duffer not to arm his character, Mike, with a candlestick – a running gag in the show about using an ineffective weapon against the monsters from the Upside Down – which Duffer thought was a reasonable request.
Duffer stated that someone really wants a gun, but he strongly disagrees. The show’s writers reinforced this by repeatedly saying ‘no’ – emphasizing that getting a gun would mean losing a part of his innocence.
Martina Radwan, the director of One Last Adventure, also explained why she felt it was right for Mike to avoid using a gun. In an interview with Variety, she said it fit his character, and that picking up a weapon would have cost him his innocence. She believes it was important for him to remain the ‘nerdy kid that plays D&D’.
In the show’s finale, Mike desperately asks Nancy for a gun, and she hands him one—though it turns out to be a flare gun. Mike is initially relieved to have a weapon, but Lucas quickly points out it won’t be very effective.
You can now watch the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, along with all previous seasons, on Netflix. The show was created by the Duffer Brothers, who also worked as executive producers with Shawn Levy, Iain Paterson, and Curtis Gwinn.
I’m a big fan of the whole cast of Stranger Things, but alongside Finn Wolfhard, you’ve got incredible actors like Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, and Noah Schnapp – it’s a really talented group!
