A playful idea started by Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool – bringing Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine ‘until he’s 90’ – is now seeming possible. Marvel fans have embraced this concept as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) prepares for big upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, and also considers how to integrate the X-Men into the main MCU storyline. Even though Jackman’s Wolverine has had several satisfying conclusions, fans are still eager to see him reprise the role.

When Logan came out in 2017, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart earned a Guinness World Record for having the longest careers as live-action Marvel superheroes – at that time, 16 years, 7 months, and 17 days. While the record has changed hands a few times since then with the return of popular characters, Jackman was set to reclaim the title with 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. However, the addition of Wesley Snipes, reprising his role as Blade, to the film means he’ll now share the record instead.

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart once shared the record for the longest time portraying the same Marvel character. However, with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Patrick Stewart became the sole record holder, having played Professor X for 21 years, 9 months, and 22 days. But then, Deadpool & Wolverine brought Jackman back into the role, potentially giving him the record with 24 years and 12 days as Wolverine.

It wasn’t until the news broke that Wesley Snipes would also appear in the movie that the record was set. Snipes, who first played Blade in 1998, officially became the actor with the longest career portraying a live-action Marvel superhero, having played the role for 25 years, 11 months, and 5 days by the time Deadpool & Wolverine was released. Hugh Jackman recently shared his reaction to hearing this news in a new interview with Buzzfeed UK.

Jackman jokingly said that if he’d known what would happen, he would have removed Reynolds from the project entirely. He then considered the future, suggesting their playful rivalry might continue for years to come. ‘It’s basically a competition to see who lives longer now,’ he said, ‘and I think Wesley’s got this one.’

I’m so excited for Avengers: Doomsday! It’s amazing to think that when it comes out in December, we’ll have a four-way tie for the longest-running actors playing the same characters in major film franchises. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden will all have been playing Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops for an incredible 26 years, 5 months, and 4 days! There’s even talk Hugh Jackman might return as Wolverine, which would make it a five-way tie! But honestly, knowing Marvel, Avengers: Secret Wars is going to throw everything into chaos and someone else will likely steal the title – it’s all part of the fun!
