KPop Demon Hunters’ Writers Almost Made a Shrek Spinoff Movie & We Need It To Happen

The animated film KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a huge success for Netflix. Since its release last year, the film has become incredibly popular, and Netflix is planning a major promotional campaign to celebrate it. A sequel is already confirmed, and even more projects are in development, including a TV series, a live-action movie, and stage plays around the world. Interestingly, early plans for the writers of KPop Demon Hunters involved a surprising crossover – they were once tasked with developing a story featuring a character from the Shrek universe.

Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan created the characters Zoey, Mira, and Rumi. While they’re preparing for the 2029 sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, they’re also collaborating with Tim Burton on a remake of the classic film Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the pair initially worked on an animated movie centered around Lord Farquaad, an early villain from the Shrek franchise. It’s currently unknown what happened to that project, but a Farquaad-focused film could still happen.

Will Shrek’s Lord Farquaad Return?

A movie centered on Lord Farquaad would likely need to be a prequel, as he was defeated and eaten by Dragon at the end of the first Shrek film. Although he’s appeared briefly in other Shrek projects, like as a ghost in the Shrek 4-D ride, Farquaad hasn’t been a major character in the films or spin-offs since then.

Good news for fans! Lord Farquaad might return in the upcoming Shrek 5, scheduled for 2027. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all coming back to voice their original characters, and Zendaya will be joining the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter. John Lithgow, who originally voiced Farquaad, is also busy playing Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter series on HBO Max. Given how much magic and fantasy have been part of the Shrek movies, it’s definitely possible that the first film’s villain could make a comeback.

Although Lord Farquaad isn’t currently planned to star in his own movie, another character from the Shrek universe will be getting one. Eddie Murphy revealed late last year that a film focusing on Donkey is in development, giving the beloved, talkative sidekick his own story. While details about the plot are still unknown, the project shows that the Shrek franchise is still alive and well.
