Meta is shutting down three of its game development studios: Armature Studio, Sanzaru Games, and Twisted Pixel, according to a statement to Gematsu.
Today, Bloomberg reported that the company is planning to lay off over 1,000 employees from its Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual reality headsets and software.
So, Meta’s been snapping up some of my favorite game studios! They got Sanzaru Games way back in February 2020, and then in October 2022, they added Twisted Pixel and Armature Studio to their team. It’s cool to see them investing in game development, but I’m definitely curious what this means for future games!
Armature Studio created the virtual reality version of Resident Evil 4, published by Oculus Studios (which was part of Meta, but the game launched before Meta fully acquired Oculus). The studio hasn’t released any new games since being acquired. They’re also known for developing Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and Where the Heart Leads.
Sanzaru Games is the studio behind the virtual reality games Asgard’s Wrath and Asgard’s Wrath 2, developed under Oculus Studios. Before that, they were well-known for creating popular PlayStation games like Secret Agent Clank, The Sly Collection, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for Sony. They’ve also worked with SEGA, developing Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.
Twisted Pixel, the team behind Marvel’s Deadpool VR (created with Oculus Studios), previously gained recognition for popular Xbox 360 games like ‘Splosion Man and Ms. Splosion Man.
Meta has confirmed it’s adjusting its investment strategy, moving some funding away from the metaverse and towards wearable technology. According to a Meta spokesperson, this shift will allow them to invest more in growing their wearables line this year.
