At last month’s Jump Festa, many fans of action manga (shonen) were surprised to see that Dragon Ball wasn’t represented with a stage presentation. Instead, the creators decided to host their own event dedicated to the series. On January 25th, the Dragon Ball Genki Dama Festival will reveal exciting new information about the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama. With the festival just around the corner, let’s take a look at what fans are hoping to see.
7.) Dragon Ball Super’s Anime Return

Since the original Dragon Ball Super anime finished in 2018 with the Tournament of Power, fans have been eager to see the Z-Fighters adapt more stories from the Dragon Ball Super manga. The manga continued after the tournament, featuring battles against characters like Moro, a wizard who absorbs energy, and Granolah, an alien bounty hunter. These storylines offer plenty of material for new episodes, and fans are hoping they’ll be animated. And speaking of the original source material…
6.) Dragon Ball Super’s Manga Return

Since the sad passing of Akira Toriyama, the future of the Dragon Ball Super manga has been uncertain, with only a few new chapters released. The most recent chapter showed Goten and Trunks becoming masked heroes. Although it hasn’t been officially announced, it seems likely that Toyotaro, who has been heavily involved in the story recently, will take over the manga. In fact, Toyotaro created many of the plot points for Dragon Ball Super, getting approval from Toriyama. The manga is expected to continue the story after the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, opening up many possibilities for the future.
5.) Dragon Ball Daima Season 2

The new anime series, Dragon Ball Daima, aimed to connect the stories of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. Many fans weren’t sure if a new story was needed, but Daima surprised them by delivering moments longtime fans had been hoping for. Notably, Goku officially unlocks Super Saiyan 4, and Vegeta reveals his own Super Saiyan 3 form, creating some truly impressive scenes. While it’s unclear if there will be a second season, the show’s ending suggests more adventures are coming, particularly within the Demon Realm.
4.) A New Dragon Ball Movie

Since the Tournament of Power ended, the Dragon Ball story has primarily continued through movies. Following Goku’s discovery of Ultra Instinct and his battle with Jiren, the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly introduced a new version of Broly into the main storyline. Then, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero brought back the Red Ribbon Army with a new leader and a terrifying creation called Cell Max. This led to both Gohan and Piccolo unlocking powerful new forms. If the anime series returns, it’s likely the next installment will be another movie.
3.) A New Dragon Ball Video Game

Considering all the options, a new Dragon Ball video game announcement at the Genki Dama Festival seems like the most likely outcome. The Dragon Ball series has a long history of appearing on various gaming platforms, going beyond just traditional fighting games. Both Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Sparking Zero are still being updated with new content, and we anticipate even more to come. Plus, with other games like Dragon Ball: The Breakers and Dragon Ball: Gekishin Squadra still active, it’s clear there’s always demand for more adventures with Son Goku.
2.) The Return of Black Frieza

For years, fans have felt something was missing from Dragon Ball: Frieza in his most powerful form. That changed with the conclusion of the Granolah the Survivor Arc, where Frieza unlocked a new transformation, making him the strongest being in the universe (next to the gods). Many fans predict he’ll be the next major villain the heroes face, and for good reason – his new “Black Frieza” form effortlessly defeated both Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with a single blow, making his return a highly anticipated event.
1.) A Dragon Ball Remake

The Dragon Ball franchise is due for an anime remake. Whether it’s revisiting the original Dragon Ball, continuing with Dragon Ball Z and its iconic Super Saiyan transformations and alien planets, or even adapting the events of Dragon Ball Super more faithfully to the manga, a fresh animation style would be fantastic. We got a glimpse of what modern animation could bring during Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, particularly when it showed the beginnings of Goku and his friends’ adventures. A remake of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z would be a great fit, and fans are hoping the upcoming Genki Dama Festival will announce their return.
