25 Years Ago, This Lost Disney Sci-Fi Superhero Series Ended (And You Can’t Stream It Anywhere)

A popular Disney animated superhero series ended 25 years ago, and unfortunately, fans haven’t been able to find a good-quality version to stream legally. While Disney has created many beloved animated series over the years, the company doesn’t always prioritize them. Despite the launch of Disney+ and other streaming services offering a chance to revisit these classic shows, many remain unavailable.

This also includes shows based on popular Disney/Pixar movies like Toy Story, such as Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. This series imagined what real adventures Buzz Lightyear might have in space. It’s similar to a show Andy might have watched and gotten a toy based on, rather than the more recent movie Lightyear, which attempted a similar idea. Unfortunately, you can’t currently watch Buzz Lightyear of Star Command on Disney+ or any other streaming service.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command Ended 25 Years Ago

The story of Buzz Lightyear expanded beyond the Toy Story films with the direct-to-video release of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which also served as the first episodes of an animated series. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins introduced a new version of the character, voiced by Patrick Warburton instead of Tim Allen, and showed Buzz dealing with the loss of his original partner while preparing for future adventures with a new team.

The animated series debuted on ABC and UPN in 2001, with a single, long season of 62 episodes. It concluded on January 13, 2001, after 35 years. Similar to the world of Toy Story, the show featured Star Command, a skilled team of fighters dedicated to protecting the universe from the threats of Emperor Zurg. After losing his original partner and discovering a betrayal, Buzz joined forces with a group of new, somewhat clumsy recruits, and together they embarked on numerous adventures.

The animated series was a fantastic extension of the Toy Story universe when the idea still felt fresh. While Toy Story has expanded with many films and specials over the years, a 2D animated space adventure seemed like a brilliant concept back then – and it delivered! The series offered exciting, standalone adventures that really tested Buzz and the other characters. It also allowed Buzz to show a more playful and adventurous side that the Toy Story films only suggested.

What Happened to Buzz Lightyear of Star Command?

The story of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is similar to what happened with many animated shows from the late 90s and early 2000s. If a show did well after its first episode, networks would often order a season of around 50 to 60 episodes. This was enough for the show to be rerun and shown in syndication. Many shows were made this way – they’d air once, then be repeated frequently to fill out the TV schedule.

Even though Buzz Lightyear of Star Command stopped making new episodes a long time ago, it continued to air on television for years. Unfortunately, that means it’s largely been forgotten in today’s world of streaming. It hasn’t been added to Disney+, and there are no plans for it to return to the platform or the Disney Channel, despite gaining a dedicated fanbase over time.

Unfortunately, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command isn’t available on major streaming services. While some classic episodes can be found on YouTube, the quality isn’t great and it’s not an official release. You might be able to find the original pilot movie on DVD or VHS in retro stores, but generally, it’s very difficult to watch. It’s disappointing, because the show is a really enjoyable science fiction adventure.
