Every Game of Thrones Show Releasing In 2026 & Beyond

The saying, ‘What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger,’ perfectly describes the story of HBO’s Game of Thrones. While the original series concluded in 2019 and faced criticism, the franchise as a whole isn’t just surviving—it’s expanding. Though it may not dominate pop culture in the same way due to changes in how people watch TV with streaming, there are now more Game of Thrones shows being created than ever before.

For years, HBO has been eager to create more shows set in the world of Game of Thrones. They tried developing several spinoffs, including a prequel about the ancient history of Westeros and a series focused on Jon Snow, but both were cancelled because the storylines weren’t quite right. Another potential show, set in the poorer district of King’s Landing, also didn’t move forward. Luckily, there’s still a lot of story to tell in Westeros. House of the Dragon, which premiered in 2022 and continued with a second season in 2024, proved successful. Now, with another Thrones show in development, the future of the franchise looks promising.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 1

Begins January 18th, 2026 on HBO & HBO Max

In 2026, a new series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will launch as the second spinoff from the popular franchise. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (known as Dunk) and his young squire, Egg, as they travel across Westeros. The first season adapts The Hedge Knight and centers on a tournament where Dunk hopes to establish himself as a skilled knight, leading to encounters with members of important families, including the Targaryens.

This show offers a more relaxed and humorous experience than previous ones, without sacrificing quality. It’s already proving popular with critics, currently holding an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by Ira Parker and Steve Martin, the series stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg.

House Of The Dragon Season 3

Coming to HBO & HBO Max In Summer 2026

Fans of House of the Dragon will have to wait until summer 2026 for the show’s return – a specific date hasn’t been announced yet. The second season ended with a lot of suspense, setting the stage for Rhaenyra’s attempt to take King’s Landing and a huge naval battle called the Battle of the Gullet. These events will likely kick off the third season with a dramatic and action-packed continuation of the Dance of the Dragons.

Most viewers already have a good idea of what to anticipate, so the new season needs to quickly get to the important events from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. This season promises to be the biggest one yet. Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke return as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, and Alicent Hightower, respectively, and they’ll be joined by new cast members James Norton and Tommy Flanagan.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2

Confirmed To Release In 2027

Viewers of shows like House of the Dragon have become accustomed to long waits between seasons—often two years or more. Fortunately, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms won’t make fans wait as long. HBO has confirmed a second season will arrive in 2027 (the exact release date is still to be announced). Filming has already begun, which is helpful since one of the lead characters is a child and they need to avoid him growing up too much during production. The new season will be based on George R.R. Martin’s The Sworn Sword, following Dunk and Egg as they work for Ser Eustace Osgrey and get caught up in a minor dispute with a neighboring family.

House Of The Dragon Season 4

The Dance Of The Dragons Concludes In 2028

HBO has confirmed that Season 4 of House of the Dragon is scheduled to premiere in 2028. While a specific release month hasn’t been announced yet – and plans could change – a summer launch would likely follow the pattern of previous seasons. This season is expected to be the last, wrapping up the Targaryen family’s conflict and concluding the first spin-off series from Game of Thrones.

Other Game Of Thrones Spinoffs In Development

There’s More To Come From Westeros & Beyond (Including Sequels?)

Currently, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are the only Game of Thrones spin-offs that HBO has greenlit for full production. While no other shows are immediately starting filming or have announced casting, several potential series are being developed at the network, including:

Aegon’s Conquest tells the story of Aegon Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror, and his invasion of Westeros. Along with his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their dragons – Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes – he was nearly invincible, with only Dorne resisting his rule. Aegon became the first Targaryen king of Westeros, uniting most of the kingdoms and establishing a dynasty that lasted for nearly 300 years. The series is being developed by Mattson Tomlin, who also wrote for The Batman, and is based on the book Fire & Blood.

The planned series, 10,000 Ships, will tell the story of Princess Nymeria, the historical figure Arya Stark named her direwolf after. Nymeria led her people, the Rhoynar, to Dorne after it was conquered. While her story appears in A Song of Ice and Fire and The World of Ice and Fire, this series would expand on it with new details. The title refers to the massive fleet of 10,000 ships Nymeria commanded to transport her people, a number often discussed within the story’s history. Set approximately 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this would be the furthest back in time of any of the planned spinoffs. Originally, Amanda Segel (Person of Interest) was set to write the series, but George R.R. Martin recently confirmed that Eboni Booth is now writing a new pilot episode.

Following the success of House of the Dragon, a new series called The Sea Snake will explore the early adventures of Corlys Velaryon. The show will focus on his legendary voyages around the world, where he gained immense wealth. These travels took him to exotic and largely unseen locations, potentially offering a unique feel compared to other Westeros-based prequel series. Originally planned as a live-action show, George R.R. Martin has indicated it may now be developed as an animated series.

Another potential spin-off, The Golden Empire, would move the story away from Westeros and explore the lands of Yi Ti in Essos. This empire is inspired by Imperial China, and because it’s not extensively detailed in the books or show, creators would have a lot of freedom to develop its unique story and culture.

Beyond the prequel series already in the works, HBO is also starting to develop sequels to Game of Thrones. Details are scarce – we don’t know what the stories will be about or if any characters we already know will return. While possibilities abound – like a show following Arya Stark’s journey west of Westeros, or a story set far into the future – these are just ideas at this point.
