Just last week, Cygames launched ‘Cygames AI Studio,’ and now the Granblue Fantasy developer has issued an apology on social media.
Predictably, the first announcement was met with strong criticism, considering the widespread skepticism about using generative AI in video games right now.
The company announced its new studio would focus on AI research and development. However, this announcement was immediately met with strong public criticism.
This apology isn’t actually for creating the AI studio. Cygames explains that they simply didn’t clearly communicate their reasons for doing so.
We recently announced the launch of Cygames AI Studio, Inc. in Japanese, but didn’t mention the ongoing discussions and concerns about generative AI. We are truly sorry for any worry this may have caused.
Cygames quickly responded to the concerns, assuring everyone that they don’t use AI-generated art in their games. They also promised they’ll always announce beforehand if they ever decide to use AI in their products.
This announcement is already under close examination. Cygames has stated they won’t use AI-generated content without being upfront about it, and the launch of this new AI studio clearly indicates they’re committed to this technology. It doesn’t appear Cygames is abandoning this investment at all.
