God of War TV Series Finally Confirms Kratos Actor (And He Has a Franchise Connection)

Fans have been highly anticipating the God of War TV series. For a long time, adaptations of video games were often considered failures, but that’s changing. Now, people who actually played the games are helping to create these shows and movies. Following the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario, and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us, video game adaptations are becoming a major trend in Hollywood. Amazon Prime Video, already bringing Fallout to life, is now adding God of War to its lineup, and we’re finally getting some initial details.

Prime Video announced today that Ryan Hurst will star as Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV series. Hurst is well-known to fans for his work in shows like Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, as well as the film Remember the Titans. Interestingly, he also voiced the character of Thor in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök, a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination. This marks the first major casting announcement for the series.

The God of War TV Series Confirms Ryan Hurst as Kratos

As a huge God of War fan, I’m so excited to hear that pre-production is officially happening in Vancouver for the TV series! Prime Video has confirmed they’re still looking for actors to fill out the rest of the cast, which is great news. They’ve already greenlit two full seasons, and that really shows they believe in the show – and that makes me feel a lot better knowing it’s not just a one-off! According to their announcement, the series will mostly follow the story from the last two God of War games, and they’re really emphasizing the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus. They even called that relationship “the heartbeat of the new show,” which honestly sounds perfect!

It might come as a surprise to see Sunny Hurst taking over the role of Kratos, especially considering his existing work on the franchise and Christopher Judge’s desire to continue playing the character. However, Hurst’s prior involvement with the series likely means he understands Kratos’s story and emotional depth, and is committed to honoring the character that fans have loved for years. While Judge won’t be voicing Kratos in the new God of War show, he still plays the character in the Secret Level series and remains connected to the role.

Okay, so I’m super hyped for the God of War TV show! It’s being made by a bunch of big names – Sony, Amazon, and PlayStation, all working together. But the really exciting part is who’s running the show. Ronald D. Moore, the guy behind Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, is going to be showrunner, executive producer, and a writer! That’s awesome. Plus, Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed episodes of Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout, and even Watchmen, is directing the first two episodes. Seriously, with a team like that, this show is shaping up to be incredible!
