Classic Anime Series Returns After 15 Years

Anime revivals are becoming increasingly common, with many beloved series returning to the screen. We’ve seen this with shows like Inuyasha, which continued its story with Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, and Trigun, which recently returned with Trigun: Stampede and Trigun: Stargaze. Even Neon Genesis Evangelion received four new movies. Now, in a surprising development, another classic anime is set to make a comeback in 2026, and a major new animation studio is taking on the project to revive this series about card battles.

The anime series Cardfight!! Vanguard first aired in 2011, following the manga’s release in 2010. To celebrate the series’ fifteenth anniversary, Studio MAPPA—known for popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man, and Hell’s Paradise—created a new promotional video. This is a shift, as the original series was produced by TMS Entertainment. Despite ending after sixty-five episodes, Cardfight!! Vanguard has continued to return in different forms, demonstrating its lasting popularity. You can watch the new video below.

The Cardfight Continues

I’ve been watching Cardfight!! Vanguard grow in popularity since it started in 2010, and the first anime was really just the beginning. Since then, they’ve released quite a few different TV series, all centered around the card game itself – it reminds me of how Yu-Gi-Oh! would change up characters and storylines. There have been so many series, it’s hard to keep track, but the most recent one is Cardfight!! Vanguard DivineZ. Like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, the game has really taken off in the real world, with tournaments still happening regularly.

Good news for fans of the original Cardfight!! Vanguard! The entire series is now available to stream on Crunchyroll. Here’s what the anime is about: Aichi Sendou is a shy middle school student whose life is turned around by a special card called “Blaster Blade,” a rare card from the “Vanguard” card game, which is set in the imaginary world of “Planet Cray.” When Aichi reconnects with Toshiki Kai, the person who originally gave him the card, his life begins to change for the better.

Studio MAPPA, the animation studio behind this video, has a lot coming up this year. The third season of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently airing, and the second season of Hell’s Paradise will be released later this month.

Now that Studio MAPPA is involved, what are your thoughts on the return of Cardfight!! Vanguard? Share your opinions and discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum!
