The four new trailers for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday clearly show Disney is aiming for a massive box office success with this film. It’s rare to see marketing begin so early, but Marvel recognized that Avatar: Fire & Ash – a film that attracts a broader, less digitally-focused audience – presented a great chance to reach potential viewers. So far, we’ve seen four short teasers for Doomsday, and there’s speculation that even more could be released.
The Russo brothers, known for their playful approach with fans, suggest we’ve been interpreting the recent video clips incorrectly. In an Instagram post, they clarified that these aren’t traditional teasers or trailers, but rather pieces of a larger story and hints about what’s to come. They’ve done this before, famously releasing confusing teasers for Avengers: Endgame, and it seems they’re continuing that tradition. This raises the question: what secrets and ideas can we uncover from these new clips?
9. The Doomsday Clock Explained

The four teaser trailers for the new movie all finish with a shot of the Doomsday Clock, which seems to be a central part of the film’s promotion. Many fans believe the times shown on the clock relate to specific scenes from Avengers: Endgame, and that these scenes will be important to the new movie, which is starting to feel like a follow-up to Endgame. According to the website Everything Always, here’s what those times represent:
- The Steve Rogers code: Corresponds to an Endgame scene in which the Ancient One warns that the universe would be destroyed were the Time Stone removed.
- The Thor code: A scene where the Avengers are capturing Loki, with the scene featuring the Mind Stone and the Space Stone.
- The X-Men code: Thor and Rocket discuss stealing the Reality Stone.
- The Wakanda code: Rocket talking to Ant-Man about traveling into space, immediately after the time heist plan is hatched.
It appears the Infinity Stones will play a role in Endgame. Two scenes, in particular, seem important for the current Multiverse Saga. The Ancient One’s warning feels particularly relevant now that the Time Stone has been destroyed, and Loki’s capture directly led to the branching timelines explored in seasons one and two of Loki.
8. It’s Pretty Clear Characters Have Been Hidden From Some Shots
The visuals in the trailers for Doomsday are stunning, a clear step up from the Russo brothers’ previous Marvel films. This makes the Wakanda trailer particularly interesting, as some shots appear to intentionally leave space for characters who aren’t currently shown. For example, Shuri walks into a desert scene with a lot of empty space around her, and the Thing is introduced to the Wakandans with room for another person to be standing beside him. It seems Marvel is deliberately hiding who the Thing has met, and many believe it’s Doctor Doom.
7. “Fatherhood” Is a Major Theme of Avengers: Doomsday
Many of the trailers share similar ideas, and this likely isn’t a coincidence. The first two focus on fatherhood: Steve Rogers is now a father and appears to be returning as a hero to protect his son. In Thor’s trailer, he prays to Odin for the strength to fight for his adopted daughter, Love, and return to her victorious. The post-credits scene from Fantastic Four: First Steps also suggests Doctor Doom is interested in Franklin, the son of Reed and Sue Richards. It’s becoming clear that this idea of protecting children is a major element in the upcoming stories.
The Russo brothers frequently explore father-son relationships in their films, particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For example, Captain America: Civil War centers around Tony Stark’s father being killed by the Winter Soldier, and Endgame features a reunion between Iron Man and his father, Howard Stark. Even in Infinity War, the most emotionally powerful storyline involved Thanos and his adopted daughter, Gamora. Their new project seems to be a return to these familiar themes.
6. Avengers: Doomsday is About the Afterlife Too
It’s interesting to note that two of the trailers for Avengers: Doomsday highlight the idea of the afterlife. Thor’s trailer shows him praying to Odin, who we last saw in Valhalla after the events of Thor: Love & Thunder alongside Heimdall, Jane Foster, and other Asgardians. The Wakanda trailer includes Shuri saying a king must prepare his people for what comes after death. This focus on the afterlife is particularly noteworthy since it’s already been explored in the Multiverse Saga, most prominently in the Moon Knight series.
5. Is Namor the King Preparing His People For the Afterlife?

Shuri’s words in the Wakanda trailer sound like a warning, and many people think it has to do with M’Baku. However, the trailer shows her talking about the “afterlife” while we see Namor, not M’Baku. Interestingly, the trailer also hints at trouble for Namor’s people. They appear in a desert, gazing at an old structure that resembles their own cities. This raises the question: could their underwater world be drying up, endangering Namor and his people? If so, the cliffs shown behind Shuri might actually be the remains of land that was once underwater.
4. There Are Sentinels Right Behind Cyclops
The new teaser for the X-Men movie offers a striking look at Cyclops, faithfully recreated from the comics, seemingly facing total disaster as the world around him is destroyed. The presence of a Sentinel leg behind him is particularly unsettling. It suggests this might be a final battle for the X-Men, and that not all of the mutants will survive the journey to the multiverse.
3. Thor Isn’t Using Mjolnir Anymore

It’s notable that Thor is depicted with Stormbreaker instead of his traditional hammer, Mjolnir. Many initially saw this as a playful change by Marvel, potentially because the directors of Avengers: Infinity War seemed to deliberately undo some of the surprises from Thor: Ragnarok. However, another possibility is that Thor has given Mjolnir to someone else he deems worthy – a particularly interesting idea considering Steve Rogers is set to return.
2. Thor Has Been Separated From His Daughter

Thor’s plea to Odin reveals that he’s been separated from his daughter, Love. This is surprising, as they were recently seen traveling together, suggesting something serious happened to pull them apart. It’s possible Thor has been caught in a multiversal event called an incursion, which may have removed him from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
1. We Need To Be Careful About Assuming Which Universe Things Are In

This leads us to a final, important point: we need to be cautious about assuming which realities these stories are happening in. Is the Steve Rogers we see now the same one from the end of Avengers: Endgame, or have the filmmakers surprised us with a twist? What timeline is Cyclops battling Sentinels in? And have Namor and the people of Wakanda remained in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, or have they shifted to a different timeline that experienced a catastrophic event? It’s best not to jump to any conclusions.
