As a huge DC fan, I was pretty surprised by the recent announcement from James Gunn. It basically signals the end of Zack Snyder’s vision for the DC universe – what a lot of us called the DCEU or ‘Snyderverse’. When Gunn took the reins at DC, we knew things were changing, and the release of the new Superman movie in 2025 really cemented that this new DCU is a completely separate thing. Honestly, even though we saw it coming, a lot of us Snyderverse fans were still hoping for some way it could continue, but it looks like that’s officially not happening.
It’s common for comic book movies to explore different storylines outside of the main universe. Some fans hoped that characters from Zack Snyder’s DC films might reappear in a separate story, but James Gunn has now confirmed he won’t be continuing that storyline. Instead, he’s moving forward with a fresh direction for the DC Universe, replacing elements from the previous films.
Mister Miracle Is Bringing Apokolips To The DCU
James Gunn announced on social media that Mister Miracle will be joining the DC Universe through a new animated series. The show will be based on the acclaimed 12-issue comic book run by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. DC also shared details about the series, revealing it will explore Mister Miracle’s relationship with Big Barda and his struggles against Darkseid.
There’s no prison strong enough to hold him, no trap he can’t escape. He’s Scott Free, the world-famous Mister Miracle, and considered the most incredible escape artist of all time. But his greatest challenge yet may be escaping death itself.
Scott and his wife, Big Barda, have created a peaceful life on Earth, but it’s now been shattered. A war is escalating between their home planets, and it appears Darkseid, Scott’s adoptive and ruthless father, has finally obtained the Anti-Life Equation—a devastating weapon that could allow him to control the entire universe.
With casualties mounting on both sides, Mister Miracle is the only one who can end the fighting and bring back peace. However, the dangerous Anti-Life Equation might be affecting him personally, distorting his perception of reality, bringing up old wounds, and threatening the happiness he’s found with his wife.
The incredible story of Scott Free, also known as Mister Miracle, starts here. It’s a wild, funny, and deeply emotional adventure as the son of a god, raised by the devil, attempts to rescue his family, protect the world, and ultimately find his own salvation.
The official description of the upcoming Mister Miracle animated series reveals that Darkseid and his home world, Apokolips, will be part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. The Anti-Life Equation, which Darkseid has always sought, will also be a key element in the show. This strongly suggests that James Gunn isn’t planning to carry over the storylines or characters from the previous DC films (often called the Snyderverse), even as separate, alternate stories.
The New Gods Were A Major Part Of The Snyderverse
Zack Snyder envisioned a large role for Apokolips, Darkseid, and the New Gods within his DC Universe. Zack Snyder’s Justice League focused on the Justice League battling Steppenwolf, a former follower of Darkseid, and strongly suggested that Snyder intended to build future stories around Darkseid and the New Gods as the primary villains. These elements were central to his plans for the DC Universe, often referred to as the ‘Snyderverse’.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe is developing its own version of the New Gods, rather than keeping that storyline for a separate, non-canon continuation of Zack Snyder’s previous DC films. If Gunn had intended to keep some form of the old DC Universe alive as side stories, he likely would have chosen a different villain to focus on. But with the introduction of Mister Miracle and the New Gods into a major DCU project, it’s highly unlikely that Snyder’s vision will be revisited.
If the story started by Zack Snyder’s Justice League were to continue, it would have to involve the New Gods in some way. They played a significant role in that film, so it wouldn’t make sense to ignore them. However, since Mister Miracle is bringing the New Gods into the main DC Universe already, the studio probably wants to avoid confusing viewers with two different versions of the same villains – one from the Snyderverse and one from the new DCU.
Should Darkseid Be The Big Bad Of James Gunn’s DCU?
The upcoming DC Universe will introduce the New Gods and the world of Apokolips through the Mister Miracle story, which raises two important questions: will Darkseid be the primary villain of the franchise, and is that the right choice? Currently, Darkseid is one of the few characters planned for future DC movies and shows who could realistically challenge the entire Justice League. The focus on Darkseid and the Anti-Life Equation in Mister Miracle suggests that James Gunn is leaning towards making him the central antagonist.

While Darkseid is a well-known DC villain, there are many other options who could serve as the main antagonist for the new DC Universe. Characters like the Anti-Monitor and Perpetua are powerful enough to fill that role. Darkseid has already been featured prominently in projects like the animated series Justice League Unlimited and the Justice League movie. James Gunn is uniquely positioned to introduce a compelling, new villain with a strong connection to DC’s comic book history.
