This month, Sega is bringing back three classic games from the 1990s in a single package with updated features. One of these games was previously only available in Japan, meaning players in the US and Europe will finally have a chance to experience it after more than 30 years.
Tomorrow, January 16th, Mighty Rabbit Studios, Headless Chicken Games, and Limited Run Games will be re-releasing El Viento, Earnest Evans, and Anett Futatabi as Earnest Evans Collection. This collection has been available in Japan on the Nintendo Switch for the past month, but this marks its wider release.
Three Nostalgic Sega Games
Okay, so for anyone who doesn’t know, there’s this older series I’ve been getting into. It started with a game called El Viento, which came out way back in 1991. It was made by a company called Wolf Team and was a Sega Genesis exclusive – meaning you could only play it on that console. It’s the first game in the Earnest Evans series. When it first came out, reviews were kind of all over the place, but it was popular enough to get a sequel anyway!
The follow-up to this game is Earnest Evans, originally released for the Sega CD and later for the Sega Genesis. Like the first game, it was developed by Wolf Team and became the most well-known title in the series, particularly in Western markets. However, it also received mixed reactions when it first came out.
The series concluded in 1993 with the release of Anett Futatabi, which was only available in Japan. This third game in the Wolf Team trilogy was likely the least popular, and probably contributed to the series ending after its release. So, it’s somewhat unexpected to see the series make a comeback, though Limited Run Games has been successfully reviving many lesser-known games from the 1990s, making it less of a surprise.
These aren’t remakes or full remasters, but the re-releases include some nice updates like complete voice acting for cutscenes, a rewind function, and the ability to save your progress. Despite these modern additions, the collection is designed to feel like playing the original games from the 1990s – it’s a trip down memory lane!
