Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials ending explained: Who killed Gerry?

In the last episode of Seven Dials, Lorraine stole Dr. Matip’s formula for an incredibly strong metal – one that could potentially end warfare. However, the formula could also be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands.

Bundle started to suspect Lorraine of killing Gerry and Ronnie, and he, along with Jimmy and Bill, pursued her onto a train.

Bill, after letting everyone know he was carrying a gun, rushed ahead to find Lorraine. Meanwhile, Jimmy stayed behind, attempting to persuade Bundle that Bill might actually be working with Lorraine and had been involved from the beginning.

However, as a stand-off ensued, Jimmy revealed that he was actually Lorraine’s partner in crime.

The trouble began when Gerry died. Lorraine had been slowly poisoning his champagne throughout the party, and then she staged it to appear as if he’d taken his own life by leaving the bottle near his bed.

Jimmy, knowing Ronnie and Bill were playing pranks with the clocks, deliberately put them on the mantelpiece to make things more confusing. He’d also overheard Gerry talking about a group called the Seven Dials, which added to his suspicion.

Later, Jimmy had killed Ronnie after he had worked out too much, and had arranged to talk with him.

Jimmy had previously staged an attack on himself, even shooting his own arm, to create a distraction. This allowed Lorraine the opportunity to drug Matip and steal his formula.

Jimmy was motivated by financial desperation, as he owed a lot of money. He suggested sharing the profits with Bundle, but she was shocked and upset to learn his only reason for doing it was the money.

He admitted he wasn’t the one in charge, and explained that Lorraine was on the train to deliver the formula to the real person behind the plan.

After Bill discovered Lorraine and confined her to a train compartment, Bundle subdued Jimmy and rushed towards the front of the train to interrupt the exchange.

Who was behind it all?

Bundle was shocked to discover that her mother, Lady Caterham—played by Helena Bonham Carter—was the one responsible when she reached the front of the train.

After losing her son, whom she believed died because of a reckless and intoxicated military leader, and then being left with no money after her husband’s passing, she devised a plan to sell sensitive information to enemy nations.

She betrayed her country out of spite and financial need, wanting to maintain her and Bundle’s comfortable lifestyle. Lady Caterham explained that losing their home, Chimneys, would leave them with nothing – neither a place to live nor any social standing.

Lady Caterham planned the party at Chimneys as a way to find out about the formula, and she enlisted Jimmy and Lorraine to assist her.

Actually, Lady Caterham didn’t intend to kill Gerry. It was Lorraine who did it, believing Gerry had discovered their scheme and reacting impulsively.

Bundle was shocked to learn what had happened and, in a desperate act, threatened her mother with a gun until Superintendent Battle intervened and took her into custody. Jimmy and Lorraine were also arrested.

Who were the Seven Dials Committee and what did Bundle decide?

At the conclusion of the story, Bundle was forcibly taken to the Seven Dials organization’s headquarters, escorted by armed individuals.

When she arrived, she discovered six people dressed in cloaks and fencing masks, each mask displaying a clock. To her surprise, one of them removed their mask, revealing it was none other than Superintendent Battle!

The investigation showed the Seven Dials club hadn’t caused the deaths of Gerry or Ronnie. In fact, it was an organization dedicated to protecting the world during a period of instability.

All along, Battle had been trying to protect Dr Matip and his formula.

Bundle’s father used to be part of the group and was traveling to Spain to connect with Matip when he passed away. He was killed by rivals who had found out about the group and what they were planning.

Lady Caterham learned about the formula because of her husband, Lord Caterham. She’d recently been socializing with people who knew him and enjoyed sharing information, and they let slip details he’d shared with them.

After sharing this information, Battle invited Bundle to join their group. He had been watching her closely and believed she possessed the necessary skills to help them.

Bundle agreed to Battle’s proposal, choosing a life filled with secret missions, danger, and globetrotting adventures. With her new disguise in place, she officially became a member of the Seven Dials club.
