Konami will remove one of its 2023 games from digital stores and shut down its servers on January 30th. Currently, the game is available for just $1 on the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store for Switch, Switch 2, PS4, and PS5. Although it’s a very low price, you might wonder if it’s worth buying a game so close to its servers being shut down. The good news is that the game can still be enjoyed offline, even after the servers are gone.
Konami’s WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros is a baseball game that’s really popular in Japan, though not as well-known in the US. It currently has a good 3.8 out of 5 star rating on the North American PlayStation Store. If you’re looking for a baseball game and prefer a more fast-paced, arcade-style experience compared to realistic simulations like MLB The Show, this game is definitely worth considering.
Why Is Konami Shutting the Game Down?
WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros launched in 2023, so its shutdown after only three years is surprisingly fast. Konami hasn’t explained why they’re taking the game down, but it’s likely due to issues with licenses or publishing agreements, or simply because the cost of running the game servers exceeded its profits. While disappointing, game shutdowns happen frequently, so this isn’t entirely unexpected.
Konami is developing a new baseball game called “WBSC eBaseball Series 2.0,” but they haven’t shared many details about it yet.
Konami has announced the game’s shutdown and expressed gratitude to players who have supported it since its February 2023 launch. They highlighted the three seasons of the WBSC eBaseball Series, with millions of games played and appearances at major events like the HUGAN WBSC ePremier12 and Olympic Esports Series. Konami credits the players’ enthusiasm and competitive spirit with building a strong global community and advancing the WBSC’s involvement in esports.
Konami also stated that while this part of their eSports involvement is ending, the WBSC’s journey isn’t over. They’re already looking forward to launching the WBSC eBaseball Series 2.0 and thank everyone for their support. They promise to share more details about the future soon.
