Harry Potter TV Series Won’t Bring Back 1 Iconic Part of the Originals (But For Good Reason)

The Harry Potter films are now classics, and the music played a huge role in making them so memorable. Just a few notes from the beginning of “Hedwig’s Theme” instantly identifies the song for millions of fans, many of whom even sing along. John Williams’ scores for the first three Harry Potter films were an incredible accomplishment late in his career, ranking among his most famous work like Superman (1978), Indiana Jones, Jaws, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, and Star Wars. Even with new composers taking over the music for later films, Williams’ themes continue to be used throughout the Harry Potter brand in promotions and merchandise, making his music an unforgettable part of the franchise.

With HBO’s new Harry Potter series coming soon, fans have been wondering if it would use the iconic John Williams theme music or create something new. Now we have the answer: HBO will be taking a similar approach to the Superman movies and is replacing the original theme with music composed by a highly acclaimed modern composer.

Hans Zimmer Is Scoring HBO’s Harry Potter TV Series

As a huge film score fan, I was thrilled to hear the official news: Hans Zimmer is composing the music for the new Harry Potter project! Seriously, who doesn’t know his work? I grew up with those powerful, drum-driven themes from films like Gladiator and The Dark Knight trilogy. He’s done so much for Christopher Nolan – Inception and Dunkirk are just a couple examples – and let’s not forget Pirates of the Caribbean, Kung Fu Panda, even James Bond! More recently, he blew me away with Dune and F1: The Movie. He’s a true master, and I can’t wait to hear what he does with the Harry Potter world.

Hans Zimmer won’t be composing the new music alone. He’s collaborating with his frequent partners, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman, known as the “Bleeding Fingers” collective. In a statement, Zimmer explained that the music from Harry Potter has inspired composers everywhere, and they feel honored to be part of such an ambitious project. He emphasized they understand the weight of this responsibility, believing magic exists all around us – you just have to seek it out. Their goal with the new score is to bring audiences closer to that magic while respecting the beloved music that came before.

The series also features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
