With excitement building for The Batman Part II – especially after Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joined the cast – it’s easy to overlook another Batman movie in development. DC Studios is working on The Brave and the Bold, a fresh take on the character that will fit into the main DC Universe storyline. Matt Reeves’ The Batman films will continue separately. Having two different live-action Batman series happening at the same time is unusual, and people are eager to see how DC will manage it. While rumors suggested The Brave and the Bold was progressing quickly, James Gunn has recently downplayed those reports.
I was following the buzz about The Brave and the Bold when someone asked James Gunn about the rumors that the script was done and the movie was aiming for a 2028 release. He quickly set the record straight, saying it’s not true and the script isn’t finished yet. He didn’t give us any hints about how much progress has been made, though – leaving us fans to keep speculating!
What James Gunn’s Comments Mean for The Brave and the Bold

Around the time Superman came out last summer, James Gunn mentioned that a script for The Brave and the Bold was in development. Since becoming co-head of DC Studios, Gunn has consistently stated that no project moves forward until he approves the finished screenplay. His recent update confirms that work on The Brave and the Bold script is still ongoing. While it’s unclear how close the script is to being finished – it could be almost done or need significant revisions – it doesn’t seem to be ready for pre-production stages like casting.
Batman is a key part of the DC Universe, and will be important in the future, but James Gunn isn’t pushing to start The Brave and the Bold project immediately. The ongoing Batman crime saga plays into that – Gunn has stated he wants to avoid releasing The Brave and the Bold in the same year as The Batman Part II to prevent audience confusion. He’s openly acknowledged that figuring out how to best integrate Batman into the DCU is a challenge, so taking a measured approach makes sense. Since Matt Reeves’ Batman films are already successful, there’s no rush to introduce a new Batman movie right now, allowing Gunn time to carefully plan everything.
It’s hard to say exactly when The Brave and the Bold will be released. Currently, 2028 is the earliest possible date, mainly to avoid competing with The Batman Part II. However, director Matt Reeves is still planning a third Batman movie, which could cause further delays for The Brave and the Bold. James Gunn likely wouldn’t want his new Batman film to clash with Reeves’ movies, so it makes sense to wait until the Batman trilogy is finished. While Gunn’s plan to explore separate stories is great, it might be best for The Brave and the Bold to come out after Reeves is done. Hopefully, the final Batman movie will happen more quickly than the second one, which faced several setbacks.
Fans of DC Comics are excited to see David Corenswet as Superman team up with Batman, but the new DC Universe is just getting started, so there’s no rush. DC Studios has several promising projects on the way, including the Lanterns TV series and James Gunn’s upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow. This fall, audiences will also get a preview of the DCU’s Gotham City in Clayface, meaning the franchise is growing even without Batman’s involvement for now.
