The Mobile Suit Gundam series has been around for many years, and even though it’s told many different stories across various timelines, fans still revisit the original universe. This first timeline, called the Universal Century, introduced the iconic mechs and the conflict between Amuro and Char. Recently, the Universal Century has seen a revival with a new movie set long after the war between the Earth Federation and Zeon. Now, North American fans have exciting news about the return of Noa Hathaway and another story within the Universal Century.
Fans have been waiting for the next installment in the Gundam saga, and it’s almost here! Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, a sequel to 2021’s Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash, will be released in Japan on January 30th. Good news for North American viewers: the film will also be shown here, although the exact release date hasn’t been announced yet. Adding to the excitement, popular singer SZA has created the theme song, “Snooze,” for the new film. You can listen to the song and watch the latest trailer below.
Hathaway’s Long-Awaited Return
The new Gundam movie takes place in U.C. 0105, twelve years after Char’s Rebellion. A group called “MAFTY” is fighting against the oppressive Federation government by targeting its leaders. Leading this rebellion is Hathaway Noa, son of the famous Bright Noa, who fought alongside Amuro Ray. Hathaway is haunted by a past trauma, stirred by a mysterious girl named Gigi Andalusia. Despite his confusion, he plans an air raid on the Adelaide conference, hoping to achieve MAFTY’s objectives and finally confront his own history.
Hathaway, still struggling with past experiences, finds himself captivated by a mysterious girl named Gigi Andalucia, whose unusual abilities unlock forgotten memories. Despite being intrigued by her enigmatic words, he continues to prepare for MAFTY’s planned attack on the Adelaide Conference. Simultaneously, Kenneth Sleg of the Federation Forces is organizing a defense for the conference and a strategy to dismantle MAFTY, when he receives a surprising offer from Handley Yoxon of the Criminal Police Organization. As both Hathaway and Kenneth work towards their objectives, Gigi travels to Hong Kong to pursue a mission of her own.
Noa Hathaway’s story isn’t the only recent Gundam adventure revisiting the classic Universal Century timeline. Another anime, Gundam GQuuuuuuX, offers a very different take on the conflict between the Earth Federation and Zeon. It imagines a reality where Char piloted the Gundam first, leading to a Zeon victory and a drastically altered world.
