Blake Lively’s Lawsuit-Inducing Drama It Ends With Us Is an Unexpected Global Streaming Sensation

Let me tell you, this 2024 drama was a huge success, but honestly, the controversy surrounding it ended up overshadowing the film itself. It’s a strange situation – the legal battles got more attention than the movie! They say any publicity is good publicity, and in this case, it definitely felt true, even if it wasn’t ideal.

The movie It Ends With Us is a romantic drama based on the popular book of the same name, and it explores the complexities of an abusive relationship. Starring Blake Lively, known from Gossip Girl, and Justin Baldoni (Jane the Virgin), who also directed and produced the film, it quickly became a hit. Almost two years after its release, It Ends With Us gained even more popularity as a streaming sensation across various platforms, according to FlixPatrol.

Currently, It Ends With Us is the sixth most popular movie on Prime Video worldwide. It reached number one in Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru, and ranked among the top five in many other countries across Central and South America.

The show has been very popular on Netflix in Poland, consistently ranking as the second most-watched title since January 12th.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie It Ends With Us has been a huge success, both in theaters and now on streaming. Made with a budget of $25 million, it has earned nearly $350 million worldwide, and audiences clearly loved it, giving it an 87% approval rating.

It Ends With Us centers on Lily Bloom, a florist, and her relationship with Ryle Kincaid, a neurosurgeon. As their romance develops, Lily discovers Ryle isn’t who she believed him to be, and she finds herself in a harmful situation. Complicating matters, Lily reconnects with her former love, Atlas Corrigan.

The film featured Brandon Sklenar from 1923, along with Jenny Slate and Hasan Minhaj, in addition to stars Baldoni and Lively.

What Is the Drama Behind-the-Scenes on It Ends With Us?

Trouble began for the movie It Ends With Us just before its August 6th release. Actress Blake Lively didn’t participate in any promotional events with her co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, and she and the rest of the cast appeared to avoid him on the red carpet. While many speculated about the reasons, and some criticized Lively for past behavior with co-stars, the situation escalated significantly in December when Lively filed a complaint alleging sexual harassment and a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation, as detailed in a long article in The New York Times.

Following the initial claims, Blake Lively and Dustin Baldoni became embroiled in a legal battle. Baldoni sued The New York Times for libel, and Lively, along with her husband Ryan Reynolds and publicist Leslie Sloan, countersued Baldoni for defamation and attempted extortion. Baldoni then sued Lively in return. The dispute quickly divided public opinion, with some siding with Lively, who frequently referenced the #MeToo movement, and others supporting Baldoni, who publicly shared evidence to support his defense. This occurred despite a legal principle generally preventing those accused of sexual harassment from simultaneously filing defamation suits.

The actor alleged that Lively and Reynolds attempted to take credit for the film, and made claims about Reynolds’ involvement. The dispute remains ongoing, and the initial court date in early March has been rescheduled for May 2026.

It Ends With Us is streaming on Netflix.
