After 14 years leading Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down. She’ll return to producing films, while Davie Filoni and Lynwen Brennan will now jointly lead the franchise.
While many expected Kennedy to step down, and whispers about Filoni and Brennan potentially taking over have been around for a while, the official announcement still feels like a major shift for Star Wars fans.
Both Dave Filoni and Kathleen Brennan were promoted from within the company. Filoni originally learned from Star Wars creator George Lucas, as they collaborated on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series in 2008. Since then, Filoni has been a key creative force behind Star Wars for nearly two decades, developing series like Star Wars: Rebels and Ahsoka.
Brennan’s background is primarily in business. She began her career at Industrial Light & Magic in 1999, working her way up to become president in 2009. Later, she moved to Lucasfilm, first as Executive Vice President and General Manager in 2015, and then as President & General Manager of Lucasfilm Business in 2024.
Kennedy will continue to work as a producer on several future Star Wars projects, including those currently untitled.
Kathleen Kennedy’s Exit Is the End of an Era for Star Wars
In 2012, Kathleen Kennedy took over as head of Lucasfilm, just before Disney bought the company. Since then, over the last ten years, she’s led the successful revival of the Star Wars franchise, expanding it with new films and streaming content rather than relying solely on past favorites.
Kathleen Kennedy often receives the blame for anything Star Wars fans dislike, while her contributions to successes are frequently overlooked. However, she’s been involved in every Star Wars project released in the last ten years, both the hits and the misses, including major successes like The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, and Rogue One.
Prior to Andor, she led the debut of The Mandalorian alongside Jon Favreau. The Mandalorian quickly became incredibly popular and launched a series of connected streaming shows, including The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. The story will continue as a theatrical film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
