Sometimes people just want a thrilling experience. They might not be in the mood for a tearjerker or a musical like Wicked. And when it comes to horror, they might not want to be scared—they just want a lot of action. The movies from the 2010s deliver exactly that, filled with exciting and memorable scenes. That’s why they’re still enjoyable even if you’ve seen them before, whether you’re streaming them or watching a Blu-ray.
We intentionally didn’t include superhero films, as they deserve their own separate list. The same is true for action comedies like The Other Guys – people mostly watch them for the humor and easygoing vibe, not the action sequences.
7) Machete

While the second Machete movie, Machete Kills, goes completely overboard, the original Machete is still a really fun watch. It’s definitely over-the-top, but it doesn’t include quite as much craziness – like assassins changing faces or Mel Gibson driving a vehicle from Star Wars.
The movie features Danny Trejo as a tough, action-hero type – think James Bond with a machete – who finds himself battling corrupt politicians who are hostile to immigrants. It’s a straightforward political thriller with some over-the-top, unexpected moments. The film cleverly blends references to different genres, tackles a serious issue, and includes some incredibly wild action, like a scene where someone escapes a building using another person’s intestines.
6) Fast Five

Fast Five transformed a popular, but relatively small, film series into a mainstream blockbuster. The significant increase in box office revenue between the fourth and fifth movies clearly demonstrates this wider appeal.
I absolutely loved how they took characters we already knew and liked and threw them into this huge, over-the-top heist! It wasn’t the first time the series had done a heist movie, but Fast Five‘s finale was seriously something else – bigger and way more exciting than anything before. Honestly, it’s just a really thrilling movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and even when things slow down for a bit, it’s great just watching the team hang out, joke around, and connect with each other.

5) Dredd

There are a few things that make Dredd so rewatchable, especially if you’ve already seen it. One reason is its length – it’s not too long, which is good because the movie is very intense and could easily become exhausting if it were.
The acting from Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey is fantastic. However, the movie isn’t overly complex, which actually works in its favor. You can easily watch it while doing other things without missing important plot points. It’s not a criticism – the film is simply a thrilling ride from start to finish, designed to entertain rather than make you think deeply.
Stream Dredd on HBO Max.
4) Skyfall

Unlike Quantum of Solace, which feels like a collection of weaker scenes from previous Bond films, Skyfall is a movie you can watch again and again. This is because Skyfall has a strong, well-developed script with a clear and compelling purpose.
The film aims to develop the Bond franchise and its key characters, especially Bond and M, by exploring the very human side of their complex working relationship. Combined with exciting action and beautiful visuals, Skyfall is a movie you can easily enjoy multiple times.
3) Edge of Tomorrow

You might assume time loop movies wouldn’t be very enjoyable to watch more than once, given how repetitive they are. However, the opposite is often true.
I’m a sucker for time loop movies, and ones like Edge of Tomorrow really get me. It’s fascinating to watch the same story play out again and again, but with tiny little differences each time. You see the main character constantly learning and figuring things out, which keeps the whole movie feeling surprisingly new. And honestly, when you throw in two really charismatic leads battling aliens, it’s just a winning formula!
2) John Wick (All Three Released in the 2010s)

The John Wick movies are all great to watch again and again, and even the lesser-known Ballerina holds up well. However, only three of these films came out in the 2010s, so we’ve limited our selection to those three.
One of the things that makes the world of John Wick so engaging is how carefully and consistently it’s been developed. It’s rare for an action series to build its world this well – Mad Max is probably the only one that comes close. And speaking of immersive worlds…
Stream the first three John Wick movies on HBO Max.
1) Mad Max: Fury Road

Sequels rarely outperform the original, but George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is a stunning exception. It’s widely considered the best action movie of the 2010s and easily the standout film of the summer of 2015.
Fury Road is a relentlessly fast and exciting film that gets even better with repeat viewings. The action is easy to follow, so you won’t miss details on a first watch, but the incredible car stunts and impressive world-building make you want to experience it all over again. It’s a truly immersive film that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
