Disaster movies are a classic Hollywood tradition, offering thrilling scenes of large-scale catastrophes and stories about how people cope. The genre became hugely popular in the 1970s with films like Airport and The Towering Inferno, and has continued to thrive with movies like Twister, Contagion, and Greenland, often featuring major stars. Recently, a well-known disaster blockbuster starring Mark Wahlberg – who transitioned to acting in the 90s after a breakout role in Boogie Nights – has become available on a new streaming service.
You can now stream the movie The Perfect Storm on Peacock, where it became available on January 1st. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, this dramatic film is based on the true story of the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat lost at sea during the incredibly powerful 1991 Perfect Storm. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, John C. Reilly, Diane Lane, William Fichtner, and John Hawkes as the crew of the Andrea Gail.
The Perfect Storm Is Still One of the Best Disaster Movies
I remember when The Perfect Storm came out – it was a huge box office success, making over $328 million worldwide and landing at number eight for the year 2000! But honestly, critics weren’t blown away – it only got a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences were kind of divided too, giving it a 63%. It’s funny, though, because over the years, the movie’s reputation has really grown. Now, you see it popping up on ‘best disaster movie’ lists all the time! And it’s even doing well on streaming – it’s currently one of the most popular movies on Peacock, which is awesome to see.
What truly sets The Perfect Storm apart is its skillful combination of stunning visuals showcasing the immense power of nature and a compelling human story based on a real-life tragedy. While the movie boasts impressive special effects, its strength lies in developing the crew of the Andrea Gail, making the audience deeply invested in their fate. This balance – a thrilling spectacle of the storm alongside the bravery of those facing it – makes the tragic ending all the more impactful. Director Wolfgang Petersen masterfully builds suspense, creating a sense of being trapped and helpless alongside the crew, and the actors deliver strong, moving performances that capture both their toughness and their vulnerability.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock subscribers have a lot to watch thanks to a recent wave of new content. Several movies, including Cold Pursuit, House of Gucci, and The Tomorrow War, became available at the beginning of the month. Soon after, the entire Hunger Games series and the film Twisters joined the lineup.
