Netflix’s new crime thriller, The Rip, brings Ben Affleck and Matt Damon together again, and early reviews suggest it’s a success. The longtime friends and collaborators famously won an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
After the success of their film Air three years ago, the filmmakers are teaming up with Netflix for a new crime thriller. The story follows two Miami police officers who discover a large sum of money, which creates suspicion and tension within their team as they struggle to figure out who they can trust.
With an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Rip is off to a great start, according to 26 reviews. This continues a trend of success for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, whose recent collaborations like Air (93%) and The Last Duel (85%) have also been critically acclaimed.
Critics generally praise the new Netflix thriller for its gripping and complex police story, and the chemistry between Affleck and Damon is immediately noticeable. While the script isn’t perfect and the plot isn’t groundbreaking, the exciting action sequences make it an enjoyable movie to watch.
In a review for ScreenRant, Alexander Harrison praised the performances of Damon and Affleck in Netflix’s The Rip, noting that the casting was a major strength despite a weak script. He gave the film a 6 out of 10, describing it as enjoyable and perfect for a casual night in.
Ben Affleck has worked with Netflix before, but this marks the first collaboration between Matt Damon and the streaming service. Early reviews are positive for Damon, who is also starring in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic fantasy film, The Odyssey.
Netflix is off to a good start with its 2026 film lineup, building on the positive reception of People We Meet on Vacation. At the same time, they’re also close to buying Warner Bros., though Paramount is also interested in the deal.
Joining Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in The Rip are Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler, and Scott Adkins. Joe Carnahan directed the film and wrote the script, and Affleck and Damon were also producers.
Affleck and Yeun will work together again after The Rip. Affleck is set to direct and star in a new crime thriller called Animals, and Yeun will also be in the film. Originally, Damon was going to star, but he had to withdraw due to his commitment to The Odyssey. However, he’s still producing the movie.
The Rip will release exclusively on Netflix on January 16, 2026
