Fans of Dungeons & Dragons are excited to find out what’s planned for the game in 2026. While Wizards of the Coast hasn’t revealed everything yet, they’ve recently shared a preview of their work. A new set of playtest materials, called Unearthed Arcana, is now available, letting players try out four new character subclasses. Remember, these materials are still being developed and player feedback will be collected through a survey launching soon.
This latest Unearthed Arcana release kicks off 2026 with four new character options called “Mystic Subclasses.” These subclasses explore unique ways to use magic, which is great news for players who enjoy spellcasting classes. You can find the playtest materials for all four classes on D&D Beyond now. The survey to share your feedback will open on January 22nd, giving you time to try them out first.
D&D Explores More Magic Mechanics in January 2026 Unearthed Arcana

The latest Unearthed Arcana provides a first glimpse at new magical subclasses for four classic Dungeons & Dragons classes: Monk, Paladin, Rogue, and Warlock. Each of these subclasses incorporates magic in a unique way. Some characters actively cast spells, while others either draw power from existing spellcasters or protect them in battle. These new options look quite promising!
The Warrior of the Mystic Arts is a Monk subclass that combines martial arts with spellcasting. Unlike traditional Monks, this subclass lets you learn and use select spells and cantrips from the Sorcerer class, up to 4th level spells by level 20. Some features being tested include the ability to cast a cantrip during a multi-attack and spending Focus Points to improve your concentration on spells.
Our new Paladin class is called the Oath of the Spellguard. These paladins dedicate themselves to protecting magic and act as bodyguards for mages. They’re also committed to fighting anyone who misuses magical power. This subclass allows players to strengthen their bonds with allies, briefly boosting their defense with your Charisma. You’ll also get an extra chance to react and strike down enemies while they’re casting spells, and gain more abilities to disrupt spellcasting as you gain levels.
The new Rogue subclass, Magic Stealer, does exactly what its name suggests – it doesn’t just steal money, but magical power too. With this class, you gain abilities to drain magic from others and use it to restore your allies’ spell slots. You can also use a special attack called Cunning Strike to disrupt magic in battle, and even stop spells from being cast at higher levels.

The latest addition is a new Warlock subclass called the Vestige Patron. This Warlock draws power from a fading god who desperately wants to reclaim their strength. As the god weakens, it appears on the battlefield as an ally, fighting with you. Warlocks of this subclass gain access to unique spells depending on the specific divine area—or Cleric Domain—of the Vestige that empowers them.
You can find all the playtest subclass options as PDFs on D&D Beyond. If you have feedback, look for a survey on January 22nd where you can share your thoughts and help shape these potential new additions!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on these new playtest subclasses! Share your feedback in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
