In a way, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy feels like the perfect way to celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary. The idea for a show about Starfleet Academy actually dates back to 1966, and people have been trying to make it happen for decades. However, this isn’t the Academy seen in the original Star Trek or The Next Generation. The new series takes place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, following a massive event called the Burn that nearly stopped all space travel.
The Star Trek universe is currently experiencing a fascinating shift. After a devastating event called the Burn, the Federation had withdrawn from widespread galactic involvement, becoming a smaller, more localized power. Now, thanks to the USS Discovery uncovering the cause of the Burn and preventing it from happening again, the Federation is working to regain its former influence and rebuild alliances. This rebuilding effort is leading to significant changes, and in the second episode of Starfleet Academy, we see the most dramatic one yet.
The Federation is Finally Moving Away from Earth
The Federation began in 2161 with four original members – Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar. However, it truly took shape thanks to the efforts of humans, leading to Earth being chosen as the Federation’s capital. Earth’s neutral position was helpful, as the other founding races had long and often troubled histories with each other. As the Federation expanded quickly, Earth continued to serve as its capital, becoming increasingly central over time.
Things drastically shifted after the Burn. Starfleet grew worried about Earth’s safety, and Federation Headquarters moved to a location off-planet. This was symbolized by Earth leaving the Federation, signaling a period of weakness. However, the arrival of the USS Discovery changed everything, making interstellar travel possible again. Captain Burnham’s strong belief in the Federation motivated others, allowing the Federation to rebuild and eventually welcome Earth back into its ranks.
In the Starfleet Academy episode 2, it was previously thought Starfleet would return to Earth. However, leaders have decided to move headquarters to Betazed instead. This decision was made to help protect Betazed and welcome the Betazoids back into the Federation. It’s a strategic choice, as the Betazoids previously defended their area of space with a powerful psychic barrier, which will now add an extra layer of security for Federation Headquarters.
What the Federation’s New Home Really Means for Star Trek

This event is a significant setback for Earth’s standing within the Federation. More importantly, it points to a future where the Federation is more inclusive, and Humanity isn’t necessarily the central focus. This change gives races like the Betazoids an opportunity to rise to equal prominence. The Federation proposed this shift specifically to reassure the Betazoids of its commitment to them, and to avoid limiting its own future growth. Overall, it demonstrates a renewed confidence and ambition within the Federation.
Earth continues to be a vital world for the Federation. Importantly, it still houses Starfleet Academy – a deliberate choice for strategic reasons. Separating the Academy from Starfleet Headquarters, now located in different star systems, significantly enhances the Federation’s security. It was always risky to have the Federation’s present and future concentrated on one planet, as a single attack could cripple both, requiring disproportionate protection for Earth.
Looking at it from the outside, this change feels true to Gene Roddenberry’s original idea of the future. It suggests a time when humanity has matured and become just one of many spacefaring races, happily accepting that Earth won’t always be the leader. It’s a fitting way to mark Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary.
