Forget James Bond, Tom Hiddleston Proves He’s the Darker, Steamier Spy to Root for on Streaming

After ten years, Jonathan Pine – the iconic secret agent created by John le Carré – is back in Season 2. Fans have been waiting a long time for his return, and the new season of the spy thriller is already a hit on streaming platforms.

The first season of The Night Manager was adapted from John le Carré’s 1993 novel. When it came time to plan a second season, a major challenge arose: there wasn’t a follow-up book to base it on. So, Season 2 ventures into new territory, with the author’s son, Simon Cornwell, guiding the show’s evolution. Fortunately, the team successfully expanded the story, and The Night Manager Season 2 has been as well-received by critics as the first.

Just a few days after its release, Season 2 of The Night Manager is already a hit, climbing the streaming charts worldwide and in the U.S. Here’s a look at what the new season is about…

Jonathan Pine, now going by the name Alex Goodwin, has tried to leave his past behind. He’s living a peaceful life as a minor MI6 officer in London, managing a low-key surveillance team. But when he unexpectedly spots someone from his previous life, he’s drawn back into action, leading to a dangerous confrontation with Teddy Dos Santos, a Colombian businessman.

Pine’s latest mission takes a dangerous turn when he encounters Roxana Bolaños, a businesswoman who cautiously agrees to help him investigate Teddy’s illegal arms dealing in Colombia. Once there, Pine finds himself caught in a deadly scheme to arm and train a guerrilla force. As loyalties shift and secrets emerge, he must work quickly to uncover a plot that threatens to destabilize the country, all while trying to determine who he can truly trust and how much he’s willing to risk.

‘The Night Manager’ Season 3 Is Already in the Works

BBC/Prime Video

I’ve always loved Tom Hiddleston – everyone knows him as Loki, and for years fans have been hoping he’d become James Bond. But honestly, I think his performance as Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager is even better – it’s much darker and more intense. The new season is getting great reviews – a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes! – but it seems audiences are a bit split, mostly because of how the character’s sexuality develops throughout the story.

Despite some criticism about the show’s portrayal of bisexuality, which some have called superficial, many viewers are loving the new season. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with comments praising the strong acting, compelling story, and its contribution to the overall franchise. One viewer called it “superb,” while another highlighted a “tighter plot” than the first season. Many are also impressed with Hiddleston’s performance, describing the second season of The Night Manager as significantly better, more captivating, and both darker and more alluring.
