The 2015 Movie That Revived One of the Best Sci-Fi Franchises of All Time Just Found a New Streaming Home

Hollywood is currently experiencing a wave of reboots and revivals, and many classic franchises are finding new fans and creative energy. From Star Wars: The Force Awakens to the Creed films continuing the Rocky story, and the successful returns of horror series like Halloween and Scream, these revivals have spanned all kinds of genres and show no signs of stopping. Recently, Peacock streaming service added a film that successfully revived another beloved sci-fi franchise and kicked off a new series of movies.

After a 14-year hiatus, Jurassic World roared back onto the big screen in 2015, becoming both a box office hit and a critical success. Directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film is a new chapter in the Jurassic Park story, taking place 22 years after the original on Isla Nublar. In this world, a dinosaur theme park called Jurassic World has been built. However, when a dangerous, genetically engineered dinosaur called the Indominus Rex breaks free, everything falls into chaos. The movie became available to stream on Peacock on January 16th, shortly after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also joined the NBCUniversal streaming service.

Jurassic World Is a Legacy Sequel Done Right

Many people criticize the recent trend of reboots in Hollywood, arguing they lack originality and simply exploit nostalgia for profit, often resulting in disappointing sequels that damage the reputation of the originals. However, Jurassic World stands out as a reboot done well. It tapped into the fondness for the 1993 Jurassic Park film by returning to the iconic Isla Nublar and referencing familiar elements, while simultaneously updating the franchise for a new audience with a modern park, fresh characters, and impressive special effects. The film successfully delivered thrilling, dinosaur-filled action, making the original concept feel new and exciting again, and it proved to be a huge hit with audiences.

Jurassic World was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, becoming the second-best movie in the Jurassic Park franchise. Critics gave it a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it a loving tribute to the original film and a perfect summer blockbuster. Audiences agreed, giving it a 78% score. Financially, the movie was a massive success, earning $1.6 billion worldwide. This made it the second-highest-grossing film of 2015, one of the top ten highest-grossing films ever, and the most successful Jurassic Park movie. Jurassic World’s performance ensured the franchise would continue, leading to three more films, with the latest, Jurassic World Rebirth, released in 2025.

What’s New on Peacock?

Peacock added Jurassic World to its streaming selection in January, along with several other popular movies. Subscribers can now enjoy films like Cold Pursuit, the How to Train Your Dragon series, Mad Max, and The Shawshank Redemption.
