Superman Just Became the Most Powerful Magic Hero Alive

Superman is already the most powerful hero in the DC Universe, but he’s about to become even stronger with a magical boost. He’s involved in a crucial, high-stakes tournament – along with other heroes and villains – because Darkseid is on the verge of total victory. The only way to defeat Darkseid is to win the tournament and claim the Heart of Apokolips, an ancient artifact that grants incredible cosmic power. The competition has been challenging, forcing Superman to make difficult choices and act outside his usual moral code.

This tournament has been full of unexpected surprises. The first round was a scavenger hunt where fighters collected powerful upgrades, and Superman even briefly gained the ability to use Darkseid’s devastating Omega Beams. He then faced Captain Atom in a one-on-one battle. Though Captain Atom had the upper hand for a while, Superman ultimately won by absorbing his opponent’s energy and using it against him. Superman has become incredibly powerful throughout the tournament, and the latest round is making him even more godlike.

Superman Claims the Power of Shazam to Defeat Two Green Lanterns at Once

The third issue of DC K.O., created by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, and Javier Fernández, begins with the eight remaining fighters preparing for the next round. This round is a team battle, and each fighter can choose one previously eliminated fighter to join them. Superman selects Shazam, who is happy for a second chance after being defeated earlier in the competition. They will face off against the Green Lanterns, Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan. However, Hal Jordan has a secret weapon: he brought a Black Mercy plant with him, intending to weaken Superman during the fight.

Fortunately, Superman manages to free himself from the Black Mercy’s control, but Shazam is almost beaten by the time he does. Superman actually chose Billy as his partner because he knew Shazam could share his magical powers. Billy shouts his magic word, and suddenly, Superman is infused with the power of six gods, adding to his already incredible Kryptonian abilities. Using this combined power, Superman quickly defeats Hal and Guy, securing his place in the fourth round.

Superman With Shazam’s Power is a Huge Upgrade (That We Won’t See More Of)

It’s ironic that Superman, who is normally vulnerable to magic, could become one of the most powerful magic-based heroes with this upgrade. Combining his already god-like strength with the power of Shazam creates a hero far exceeding the capabilities of either one alone. With just a single move using this combined power, Superman easily overcomes threats like Hal and Guy. It’s disappointing we aren’t seeing more of this powerful combination.

I’m not sure what’s coming up in future issues of DC K.O., but I doubt Superman will stay super-powered for long. He’s gotten powerful boosts before, like Darkseid’s Omega Sanction and elements of Captain Atom’s past, but those powers always disappear when he moves to the next level. It’s a shame, really. It would have been awesome to see him keep and use these abilities, especially the power of Living Lightning, even for a little while. It feels like a missed opportunity.

Even though it didn’t last long, this is one of Superman’s strongest forms ever. Combining all of his existing powers with the strength of six gods takes Clark to a level he normally doesn’t reach. It’s great to see Superman and Shazam team up and combine their abilities into a single, incredibly powerful hero. Hopefully, they’ll do this again sometime and demonstrate just how formidable Superman can be when enhanced with Shazam’s magical powers.
