Forty-two years ago, Marvel’s most famous superhero underwent a huge transformation that fundamentally altered his identity. In 1984, a major storyline not only revolutionized how Marvel published comics, but also unexpectedly shifted the course of several titles, unfolding gradually over months. Though many changes occurred, one was particularly shocking, completely redefining the hero and ultimately leading to the creation of another iconic character.
In 1984, Marvel Comics launched Secret Wars, the first major storyline to bring all its characters together. This series demonstrated that large-scale crossover events could be successful, paving the way for the constant stream of such events Marvel publishes today. Also in January 1984, Amazing Spider-Man #252 was released, fundamentally changing the Spider-Man character.
42 Years Ago, Spider-Man Introduced The Black Costume
The most notable thing about the Secret Wars comic event is that Marvel revealed the consequences of the story before it had finished. At the end of each major comic book, heroes discovered a portal and vanished, leaving readers wondering where they’d gone. They reappeared quickly in subsequent issues, but with major alterations. The Secret Wars storyline then unfolded, ultimately explaining these changes.
Spider-Man went through a big transformation that still affects the character today. In Amazing Spider-Man #252, he debuted a new, all-black suit. The cover announced a “new Spider-Man,” which initially surprised readers. While it was still Peter Parker underneath, he believed he could control the suit with his thoughts. What he didn’t realize was that the suit was actually a living alien symbiote – and this was its first appearance in Marvel Comics. This storyline ultimately led to the creation of the villain Venom in Spider-Man comics.
This all began with the Venom symbiote – what initially seemed like an amazing suit for Spider-Man. He later discovered it was actually an alien and, with help from the Fantastic Four, got rid of it. However, the symbiote didn’t stay gone for long. It eventually found Eddie Brock, leading to the creation of Venom, who has been a fixture in the Marvel Universe ever since. Remarkably, even with recent developments like Mary Jane Watson becoming Venom, it all traces back to the introduction of that black suit 42 years ago.
