Star Wars Announcement Has Fans Hoping Forgotten DCU Project Gets Fast-Tracked

The recent Star Wars news from Lucasfilm has sparked excitement among fans, leading some to speculate that a shelved DC Universe project might now be developed more quickly.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really interested to hear Kathleen Kennedy talking to Deadline recently about what Lucasfilm has coming up. She touched on that movie James Mangold was set to direct – the one announced last year. Honestly, it sounds like we shouldn’t hold our breath for that one anytime soon, based on what she said. It seems like it’s been put on the back burner, which is a little disappointing, but hopefully it’ll resurface when the time is right.

According to Kennedy, the script written by Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon is exceptional, but its development is currently paused as it represents a significant departure from established norms.

What DCU project are fans hoping will happen after the Star Wars announcement?

James Mangold is also set to direct a Swamp Thing movie as part of the new DC Universe being created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. While the project was first announced in January 2023, there haven’t been many details released about its progress since then, much like the Star Wars project he’s also involved with.

Now that the new Star Wars film has been delayed, fans of the DC Universe are eager for James Gunn and Peter Safran to prioritize development on the ‘Swamp Thing’ project.

James Mangold is also set to direct a movie called High Side for Paramount Pictures. Described as a thrilling story about bikers, it will star Timothée Chalamet, whom Mangold worked with before on another project. According to Jeff Sneider, High Side is Mangold’s immediate next project, though he could potentially direct Swamp Thing after that.

When Swamp Thing was first announced, James Gunn described it as a scary origin story for the creature. He also mentioned that while it will have a different, darker tone than other DC projects, it will still connect to the larger DC Universe storyline.

Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Swamp Thing. The next DC Universe project scheduled to come out is Supergirl, planned for June 26, 2026.
