VisionQuest Will Reverse Agatha All Along’s Theme, According To Marvel TV Boss

Marvel Studios is wrapping up a three-part story that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along later this year with the new series VisionQuest. VisionQuest will feature Paul Bettany as Vision and James Spader as Ultron. The story, which began by exploring the aftermath of Wanda’s loss and introduced Agatha Harkness, will now follow Agatha and Billy Maximoff as they embark on a new magical adventure.

Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, recently shared on The Official Marvel Podcast that the upcoming VisionQuest series will flip the script on the family theme established in Agatha All Along, focusing on fathers instead of mothers. He also explained that the idea of “parenthood” is central to the entire WandaVision trilogy.

Similar to how VisionQuest explores fatherhood, Agatha examines motherhood. Throughout the entire series, parenthood as a whole is a central theme.

The show Agatha All Along revealed the heartbreaking history of Agatha Harkness, including the loss of her son, Nicholas Scratch. However, it also suggested that she wasn’t a very present or even emotionally healthy mother figure to Billy Locke, sometimes acting in ways that could be considered abusive. The series also touched on Agatha’s difficult relationship with her own mother, Evanora, whom she harshly labeled an “abomination.”

Winderbaum explained that the upcoming VisionQuest series explores an important question about fatherhood, specifically concerning Ultron, Vision, and Tommy Maximoff: “Can someone with an abusive father overcome that past and become a good father himself?”

The show VisonQuest powerfully explores themes of family, particularly the complex relationships between fathers and sons across three generations – a grandfather, his son, and his grandson. A central question the show asks is whether someone with a difficult upbringing and an abusive father can break the cycle and become a good parent themselves. The show’s impact is amplified by its fantastic cast and the creator, Terry Matalas’, skillful storytelling.

Parenthood May Be the MCU’s Biggest Phase 6 Theme

Brad Winderbaum recently shared some interesting details about the upcoming VisionQuest series, revealing that Ultron will be portrayed as a difficult and controlling father figure to Vision, whom he originally created in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The series will also feature a significant new look for Ultron.

The upcoming VisionQuest series will delve into the complex relationship between Ultron and Vision, while also showing Ultron taking on a parental role with Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff. The three-part story has the potential to offer a thoughtful look at how fatherhood differs from motherhood within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Becoming a parent seems to be a big focus in the next phase of Marvel movies. We already saw it in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it will be prominent in Avengers: Doomsday, which will showcase several heroes who are also parents.

Marketing for Wonder Man even suggested this personal connection might be explored in the upcoming Disney+ series, highlighted by Yaya Abdul-Mateen II’s unexpected early appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as himself. The actor shared that the original Wonder Man film was the first movie he saw in theaters with his father.
