Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga, first published over forty years ago, dramatically changed the Shonen genre. It popularized several common themes—or tropes—that continue to influence manga artists and popular shows today. One of the most impactful was the idea of characters transforming to gain power, which became a staple of action-packed Shonen series. While transformations existed before, none were as iconic or successful as the Super Saiyan transformation. During his battle with Frieza, Goku was the first Saiyan in centuries to achieve this legendary power, and many others followed suit.
Since the original series, many sequels and spin-offs have been created, often focusing on the Saiyan race. While numerous Saiyan warriors have appeared, the seven listed below haven’t gotten enough attention on screen.
7) Pseudo Super Saiyan

This unique transformation appears only in the 1991 movie, Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug. It’s a temporary boost in power that a Saiyan achieves when close to death, briefly giving them the abilities of a Super Saiyan. In the film, Goku was initially losing to the villain, Lord Slug, but quickly turned the tables after transforming. This new level of power was so intense it reminded King Kai of the legendary Super Saiyan form.
6) Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Kaio-ken

Goku achieved a new, incredibly powerful level by combining his Super Saiyan God form with the Kaio-Ken technique. He originally trained for this transformation to face Beerus, but first used it in battle against Hit during the tournament with Universe 6. However, using this power came with a cost: he temporarily lost control of his energy, a condition known as Delayed Onset Ki Disorder.
5) Super Saiyan Rose

Zamasu’s form is visually striking, using a special color scheme to showcase his immense power as a god. In the Future Trunks Arc of Dragon Ball Super, this transformation made him incredibly powerful – even Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks working together couldn’t initially defeat him. This form isn’t just about looks; it grants power far beyond that of a Super Saiyan God.
4) Super Saiyan 3

In the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z, Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 transformation was mostly a way to buy time while the other Z Fighters worked on their strategy against the villain. It briefly reappeared in Dragon Ball Super during the fight with Beerus. But the biggest surprise came when Vegeta used it in Dragon Ball Daima. Despite its incredible power, Super Saiyan 3 hasn’t been used often because it drains a fighter’s energy very quickly.
3) Super Saiyan Rage

As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I have to say, Future Trunks consistently delivers! But his latest form? It might just be his greatest moment, and sadly, possibly his last. He’s stuck in a different timeline now and isn’t allowed to time travel anymore, which means we probably won’t see him again. What’s really incredible is that even though it seems to be a creation just for the anime, the power boost it gave him could have completely turned the tables in any fight!
2) Legendary Super Saiyan

This incredibly rare and strong power only appears once every thousand years, and it’s always granted to a single individual. Though the anime movies first presented Broly as the Legendary Super Saiyan, Dragon Ball Super later introduced a different version – Kale, a powerful female Saiyan warrior from Universe 6.
1) Super Saiyan 4 (Dragon Ball Daima)

Super Saiyan 4 first appeared in the non-official series Dragon Ball GT, but Akira Toriyama brought it back in his latest work, Dragon Ball Daima. Just before the series ended, Goku unlocked this powerful new form thanks to Neva’s magic, which awakened his hidden potential. This transformation happened at a crucial moment – right as the main villain, Gomah, was about to deliver the final blow. Fortunately, Goku’s newfound power allowed him to easily defeat Gomah.
