Fans are excited about a new Avatar: The Last Airbender comic series, which feels like the spin-off many have been waiting for. Avatar Studios is developing several Last Airbender projects, including The Legend of Aang movie scheduled for release this year, and a sequel series called Avatar: Seven Havens. It’s great to see the franchise growing beyond The Legend of Korra, as the original Nickelodeon show created a rich world with a lot of untapped potential.
Avatar Studios has the opportunity to build upon familiar characters and stories, as well as create entirely new ones. Their initial projects seem to be doing both. However, they haven’t yet explored what feels like an obvious idea for a spin-off series, even though they have a great starting point. A recently approved project, with the blessing of the original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, highlights just how disappointing this is.
Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Newly Announced Spinoff Is About the Kyoshi Warriors

Dark Horse Comics is releasing a new Avatar: The Last Airbender story that focuses on the Kyoshi Warriors. Fans will remember this group for helping Avatar Aang and his friends. While Suki was the most prominent member in the original Nickelodeon series, this new three-issue comic, written by Brandon Hoang and illustrated by BellBessa, will explore the stories of the other warriors. It arrives on May 6th.
The upcoming comic series will feature Suki and her warrior friends battling the Fire Nation, set during the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s a welcome addition to the franchise, especially for fans who loved these characters and want to see more of their adventures. However, this new story also brings up a common wish: while the creators are exploring ways to expand the Avatar universe, many of us would love to see a show focused on the Avatar themselves, the source of the warriors’ inspiration.
The Last Airbender Needs to Give Us a Prequel Show About Avatar Kyoshi Already
![]()
Creating a live-action Last Airbender show is far more complex than making a comic book spin-off. But whenever the Kyoshi Warriors or their Avatar, Kyoshi, are mentioned, I can’t help but wish there was a TV series focused on her. While rumors of a Kyoshi show have circulated, nothing has been confirmed, which is disappointing. Kyoshi is a fantastic character, and fans don’t get to see nearly enough of her story within Aang’s narrative.
Kyoshi is a strong and direct Avatar, and her scenes with Aang demonstrate this well. These appearances have made her a popular character with fans, but they don’t reveal much about her personality or backstory. That’s why Avatar Studios should prioritize making a TV series focused on her life – there’s even a pre-written story they could use, making it a readily available project.
Avatar Studios Already Has the Perfect Foundation for a Kyoshi Spinoff

While the Last Airbender series does have two novels exploring Kyoshi’s backstory, it’s still surprising she hasn’t gotten her own animated series. Avatar Studios doesn’t need to come up with a brand new idea – they could simply adapt The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi to give this Earth Avatar the attention she deserves. (And honestly, I’d love to see adaptations of the other Chronicles of the Avatar books too!)
These books explore Kyoshi’s early life and could serve as a starting point for a TV series about her. The original Avatar: The Last Airbender offers plenty of background information to build upon. Because Kyoshi is such a popular character, I’m hoping a spinoff is being considered. Ultimately, whether we see more prequel stories will probably depend on how well the shows and movies Avatar Studios is currently developing perform.
