Following Coyote Vs. Acme’s Revival, I’m Pleasantly Surprised By The Next Looney Tunes Character Who’s Getting Their Own Movie

It’s been a confusing few years for fans of Looney Tunes. Many of the classic cartoons disappeared from HBO Max, and the movie Coyote vs. Acme was cancelled by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2023. However, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie was a critical success last year, which led to Ketchup Entertainment also picking up Coyote vs. Acme and planning its release in 2026. Now, we’ve learned that another Looney Tunes character is getting their own movie, and while it’s a surprise, it’s also exciting!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has hired Jorge R. Gutiérrez, the director of The Book of Life and Maya and the Three, to direct an animated movie about Speedy Gonzales. Details about the story are still under wraps, and a writer hasn’t been announced yet. However, Gutiérrez hinted on social media last month that he was working on a project involving the famous cartoon mouse.

Speedy Gonzales first appeared in a cartoon in 1953, but he didn’t become the character we know today until 1955, when Robert McKimson and Friz Freleng created the short film Speedy Gonzales. While some found the character controversial in the past, leading to a brief removal of his cartoons from Cartoon Network, he remains a popular Looney Tunes star. He’s continued to appear in recent shows like The Looney Tunes Show and New Looney Tunes, and was even voiced by Gabriel Iglesias in the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Jorge R. Gutiérrez, known for creating the Emmy-winning cartoon El Tigre, is taking on a Speedy Gonzales movie, and I’m confident he’ll do a great job. This isn’t the first try – a movie starring Eugenio Derbez as Speedy was planned in 2016 but never came to fruition. Hopefully, Gutiérrez will have more success. Bill Damaschke, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, recently told The Hollywood Reporter about the decision to bring him on board.

Jorge is a remarkably creative storyteller. He brings a unique artistic vision and cultural understanding to everything he does, making even familiar stories feel fresh and relevant. We’re thrilled to have him update Speedy Gonzales, a classic Looney Tunes character, for audiences around the world today.

I think Speedy Gonzalez is a great Looney Tunes character who hasn’t gotten enough attention, so I’m excited about the possibility of him starring in a movie. This new film will be entirely animated, unlike the Coyote vs. Acme project which mixed animation with live-action. I’m wondering if the movie will focus solely on Speedy and his immediate circle, or if other popular Looney Tunes characters will also make an appearance, similar to how The Day the Earth Blew Up centered around Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

Let’s hope the upcoming Speedy Gonzales movie has a smoother path to release than Coyote vs. Acme. Starring Will Forte, John Cena, and Lana Condor, Coyote vs. Acme arrives in theaters on August 28th. And if you’re in the mood for classic cartoons, you can find lots of Looney Tunes episodes available to stream for free on Tubi.
