2026 looks promising for fantasy fans, with several shows and movies on the way. While not all of our favorite series have confirmed new seasons yet, we’re optimistic they will return. Confirmed returning shows include House of the Dragon, Interview with the Vampire, and The Legend of Vox Machina. Plus, several brand new fantasy series and films are scheduled to debut, meaning there will be plenty of magical content to enjoy.
Despite all the great new shows coming out this year, we’re still awaiting release dates for a few highly anticipated series. Considering how long it takes for new seasons to appear on streaming services, they might not arrive until 2027 – or even beyond. That said, there’s a possibility they could be released sooner, which would make this year’s television offerings even better.
3) The Mighty Nein

The first season of The Mighty Nein came out in November 2025, so hoping for a second season this year is unlikely. Still, fans are eager to see what happens next with this beloved group of characters before the end of 2026. A second season was actually confirmed before the first one even aired, and production has already begun, offering some hope. However, with Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina also scheduled for release this year, Prime Video might decide to wait before releasing more The Mighty Nein. A 2027 release would give viewers something to enjoy while they wait for the fifth and final season of the main series.
2) Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Don’t expect a continuation of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, as that show has finished its run. However, a revival is planned for Hulu, and many fans who loved the show in the ’90s are excited about it. While there’s no confirmed release date for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, many hope to see it arrive in 2026. Sarah Michelle Gellar recently mentioned to Deadline that the show is still in early stages of development, so it might take longer. Despite the wait, fans are eager to return to Sunnydale, and its arrival would be a real treat this year.
1) The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

It’s been almost two years since the first season of The Rings of Power finished, and season two wrapped up some time ago. This means we can expect the show to return soon on Prime Video, potentially in late 2026. Filming for season three is already complete, but it still needs a lot of editing and special effects work. While this could delay the premiere until 2027, a 2026 release is still possible. This would follow the pattern established by the first two seasons, which aired relatively close together, and match the release schedule of House of the Dragon. If both shows continue this trend, fans of fantasy television will have plenty of new content to enjoy.
As a huge fantasy fan, I’m always dreaming about shows coming back! If any fantasy series could magically reappear in 2026, what would it be? I’d love to hear your thoughts – let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
