When film studios avoid showing previews to critics, it usually suggests they aren’t confident in the movie and want to avoid negative reviews before its release, hoping to make some money during the opening weekend. This seemed to be the case with ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ as fans disliked the trailer. However, the studio’s worries were unfounded – the film went on to earn an impressive $958 million, making it the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025. Therefore, it’s not surprising that a sequel is now in the works.

What Jason Momoa said about a Minecraft movie sequel

Jason Momoa announced that filming for the sequel to the video game movie will begin very soon. He’ll reprise his role as Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, the professional gamer. Speaking with Jimmy Fallon, Momoa said production should start around the end of April. He also shared that the new script is a big improvement over the first, saying he found it genuinely funny – something he hasn’t experienced while reading a script in a long time. He was confused by the original script, but this one had him laughing out loud.

Jared Hess, the director of the first Minecraft Movie, is back to direct the sequel, working with writer Chris Galletta. The new film is scheduled to come out on July 23, 2027.

Why audiences went wild….

The film earned $162 million during its opening weekend, making it the third-highest grossing opening ever for the studio, and fans absolutely loved it. They were particularly excited by the appearance of a zombie riding a chicken, leading to chaotic scenes in theaters. Audiences threw popcorn and streamers, and in one instance, even brought a live chicken into the cinema! This meant the ushers had to thoroughly clean the theater after every showing. It makes you wonder what kind of reaction the sequel will provoke!
